DMing Out of the Abyss I've found one decent guide, but it could use some improvement for DMs who want a little more help with this (promising, but flawed) module. I also found a few streams that were probably fun to play in, but not so much fun to watch. This module has a special place in my heart due to some incredibly rewarding and epic moments, as well as the sheer terror of being in such a strange and hostile setting. I would like to assemble a group whose playthrough can help other DMs craft an awesome, terrifying experience for players who want to feel the hairs on their arms and neck raise, their skin crawl, and their spines shiver with horrified delight.
If you:
- Are a good, cooperative player
- Want to role play a character in a terrifying environment
- Know the rules reasonably well, but can roll with any on-the-fly rulings/changes (as we seek to create good sessions, but may need to do rules discussion between them)
- Are OK being on an extremely small Youtube/Twitch channel for the benefit of other DMs
- Want to go through this entire campaign (Level 1-15, potentially a year or more).
Then please message me!
POC/Female/LGBTQ-Friendly Quick disclaimer: I've noticed that D&D doesn't just happen to have a disproportionate amount of (straight) white guys, it's also not always welcoming to people who aren't (straight) white guys. r/rpghorrorstoriesis full of examples. I've played with and DMed for people of all kinds of genders, sexualities, ethnicities, and nationalities and just want to say if you're looking at LFG listings and wondering "how many of these groups are going to be comfortable places for me, and how many are going to be...not so much?" Here's one where you're welcome. (I would assume the vast majority are as well, but doesn't hurt to mention it.)
For experienced players, please - This wildly popular new adventure takes place in the Underdark - a dangerous place full of demons, aberrations, and other horrors. You awaken as a captive, surrounded by strangers - whom do you trust? How will you escape? How will you survive?
This will be a paid campaign via Patreon, at $30 per month (so about $5 per session). The first session is free to see if you like the game/style/group. This helps me pay for advanced Roll20 features and content to make our experience great...plus having a little skin in the game is good for keeping players committed!
This campaign can be challenging, so character death is a possibility. The campaign starts at level 1 and goes up to level 15, so you'll get to see your character develop into an awesome adventurer...if you survive!
[Note: I am not playing to kill you - I want to create a story together, and killing you off hinders that. That being said, this is a dangerous place, so beware.]
Some things to note:
We won't be rules-lawyery. We'll go with Rule Zero to facilitate game play, then we can discuss any incorrect rules interpretations in chat outside the session.
Rule Zero, also known as GM fiat, is the common RPG rule that the GM has the ultimate say in all rules matters and can thus introduce new rules or exceptions to rules, or abolish old ones at their leisure. To put simply, it means the GM is like the god of the game.
As I said, I'm not playing to kill you. I'm playing with you to create a fun experience. I'll try to keep challenges balanced enough to be interesting and even a little threatening, but it's not a bad idea to have a backup character in mind, just in case.
Character Creation:
- Roll for stats in discord, but take Standard Array or Point Buy if your roll is bad.
- Published material is all OK if you can have a setting-appropriate justification (e.g. warforged presence wouldn't be taken for granted like PHB races).
- UA OK with prior approval - give me at least 1 session notice for any proposed UA content. It's meant to be play tested, so let's play test it! For any UA content that has been revised by WOTC we'll use the current revision.
- Starting equipment OR gold
- One common magic item for free.
