White Plume Mountain: Thanksgiving One-shot

When Grandpa Joe passes out from too much turkey gravy, you're gonna be bored, sitting around, wishing you had a game. Now is your chance to play a classic AD&D Adventure that was updated for 5e as part of Tales from the Yawning Portal.

THE HOOK

Three powerful sentient weapons were stolen from their owners. Servants were hanged, the streets were scoured, and even the sanctity of the thieves' guild was violated as their owners turned the land upside-down looking for clues, but finding none.

Then a cryptic letter arrived, pointing toward White Plume Mountain. Your party is being offered wealth beyond your wildest dreams to perform this simple task: travel to White Plume Mountain and retrieve the stolen artifacts, and return them to their former owners.

See my profile page for general rules and behavior and my DM style.

This is a one-shot. We will run the dungeon until it is done! Should be doable in 4-6 hours, but may be up to 8.

LEVEL 8 CHARACTERS

  • Create your own or import is allowed
  • POINT BUY for stats
  • Level 8

Prefer you to use the compendium - I have several books. I don't have the Ravnica/Eberron/Wildemount ones, so up to you if you want to do it the hard way. This is a one shot so I may be a little lenient on races here, but remember the golden rule: when about to ask to play/do something weird, think to yourself, "What would the DM say?"

(If you don't use compendiums it's on you to build your sheet. I won't help you with that! I offered the easy way.. Also, I expect you to know your class! I will help you with basics of using roll20 and running the game, but if you pick a build you should be ready to use it.)

EQUIPMENT

  • Standard class/background equipment or gold buy using the handbook rules
  • Choose 2 items from the "Uncommon" list
  • Choose 2 items from the "Common" list
  • The DM will veto one of those items at his discretion. No arguing with him about it! This is to add a flavor of randomness and challenge, while still giving you some cool stuff to play with. (And balancing it. To clarify: you pick 4 items, you only get to keep 3. You won't know which 3 until the game starts!)
  • Melee / Fighters will want to pick a magic weapon which will NOT be vetoed (if you pick two one of them might, but you will be guaranteed to have one. Monks and others with magical attacks may be exempt.)
