City of Mist

The Premise:

In the City of Mist, legends are real. This does not mean there are knights or monsters walking down Main Street donning shining armor or breathing fire, but rather that the heroes and monsters from our storybooks and legends are reborn inside regular people. These people are known as Rifts, and they live out some modern version of their legends, their Mythoi. And while they might be able to make the shining armor real or even breathe fire – they still live their ordinary lives.

You are a Rift, and you are trying to find a delicate balance between the mysterious and intoxicating nature of your Mythos and the aspects of your daily life that keep you grounded and, ultimately, human. This, of course, is easier said than done, since the City is full of mysteries, and the answers your Mythos demands might be closer than you think…

Welcome to City of Mist, a game of detective-noir investigations and super-powered action in a modern metropolis. City of Mist is a narrative-focused roleplaying game which means the rules are there to enhance the story first and foremost.

New and experienced players welcome!

Features:

[Motivation-driven characters] Your character is motivated by their Mysteries and Identities. Follow your character’s themes to get access to new features or go against them and awaken other parts your character in this unique way to develop your character.

[Limitless potential for characters] There are very few limits when it comes to creating your character. Base your character on an existing story from mythology, legend, fairy tale, ghost story, famous literary work, urban legend, religious tale or real world event that has received legendary status. Give your character exactly the powers, abilities, gear and resources you want. Everything in City of Mist is described in tags, which are yours to write down. This means your character is exactly what you want it to be.

[Powered by the Apocalypse] This game runs on the Apocalypse engine and as such is heavily reliant on the narrative and the context of the actions you take. This allows for a great amount of player influence and creativity during gameplay, giving you great freedom to perform dramatic moves and create climactic outcomes.

[Narrative outcomes] Creatively use tags and statuses to create any outcomes you wish for your moves. Want to search for a rope, blind a guard or slow down time? Every action can have a lasting impact on the scene and even on the world at large.

How To Apply:

Read the instructions in the Application thread carefully. Any applications posted outside of the thread will be deleted.

The game will not start until January 3rd.

I will be selecting our players on or before December 27th. The game will run once per week, every Sunday at 6pm GMT and we’re using Discord for voice chat.

How To Ask Questions:

Please feel free to ask them, in the Q&A thread if possible. That way everybody can benefit from the questions posed.

For The Insatiably Curious:

There is a Details thread in which you can find more details about the system, character creation and more.

Things That Are Mandatory:

  • A Headset + decent quality microphone.
  • The ability to use Discord.
  • Solid availability for 3-4 hours a week.
  • Being creative, considerate, chill and cool.

Things You Must Be Cool With:

  • A narrative system that requires letting your character’s motivations or questions guide your actions. This can results in PC’s actually hindering each other in certain circumstances.
  • An involved 'session zero' in which we collaboratively create the characters and their relationships to each other, as well as the nature of their investigations and the City they live in. This session zero could take 2 sessions due to the freedom of character creation.
  • A GM that loves the collaborative story-telling aspect of RPGs and tries to give every player a moment in the spotlight.
  • Giving other players a moment to shine.
  • Grit and slight adult themes like drug and alcohol use and adult language. However: I REFUSE to include racism, sexism or sexual violence in my games.
  • A game that emphasizes creative problem-solving over tactical combat. This game thrives when RP and story are at the forefront. Confrontations can be resolved in many ways and as such, combat might be slight or even fully avoided, or a large part of every session, depending on the actions of the players.
