Out of the Abyss (Charity Game)

Dare to descend into the Underdark! (Levels 1-15, official WotC module)

Explore the Underdark: a subterranean wonderland, a vast and twisted labyrinth where fear reigns. It is here that portals to the demonic Abyss open, and what lies beyond terrifies even the cruel creatures born to the dark. Stop the Underdark’s tumble into madness before it consumes you and all of the Forgotten Realms!

About the DM and the game

  • I'm a high-effort DM who puts a lot into making the world and characters feel alive
  • I run games as close to written as I'm able, with only minor additions for flavor or PC hook development
  • I highly encourage player creativity and will happily "yes-and" anything you can justify within the fiction and game world
  • I encourage as much RP as you're comfortable with
  • I play rules-as-written (or as close as I know how)
  • I ask that you respect and don't interfere with other people's fun
  • Sessions last three hours and include a five minute stretch break at 90 minutes
  • We'll be doing an informal session zero on discord leading up to the first session

Why I am charging for this game:

Attendance and player investment, that's it. After some difficulties with players just disappearing, not knowing who would show up, or players taking seats while not actively engaging with the game, I've decided to reluctantly use a pay-to-play model. Any fees collected go toward the cost of books and assets for the campaign. Anything left over goes to a local LGBT shelter. I account for all income and expenses in discord, along with receipts for charitable donations.

The truth is I could never charge enough for a DnD game to cover the time invested or make a meaningful profit, so charging money has nothing to do with that. However, it does provide other important benefits:

  • A modest fee ensures only players with a serious interest take up seats
  • It's easier to get into a paid game since there's less competition for slots
  • It gives me a concrete way to see who's going to show up and when I need to fill empty seats in advance
  • Players are more likely to show up after paying a small fee
  • It funds additional module, source book, and asset purchases for a higher quality gaming experience
  • Everything left over helps LGBT youth shelters give young folks a place to stay after a crisis

Some important things to know about payment:

  • To confirm your spot you must pay the fee no less than 24 hours before the game starts
  • Starting 24 hours before the game I'll replace anyone who hasn't paid with fill-ins who do
  • If you pay in advance and notify me at least 24 hours before the game starts that you won't make it, your payment gets refunded
  • If you notify me less than 24 hours in advance your payment is forfeit (because this impacts the rest of the players)
  • If you no-show in this way two sessions in a row you'll be removed from the game
  • If we get less than three players to show up payments are refunded for anyone who does show up (and the game is skipped for that week)
  • "Showing up" means being in the discord voice channel and Roll20 game no more than 15 minutes after the scheduled start time
  • Payment is done through a PayPal Money Pool so all income and expenses are visible to everyone

Just reach out. You can message me directly or post a new topic in the listing here. I can send a discord invite on request so you can see the other campaigns that I'm running.
