This is NOT Call of Cthulhu, this IS Basic Roleplaying!
Roll20 won't let me list the game as Basic Roleplaying, the closest system it will let me label this as is Call of Cthulhu or Basic Fantasy; it's very similar to both, but there are differences.
We will be playing through the Age of Worms adventure path using the Basic Roleplaying system. I'm sort of inventing a setting for this game, I'm not using any official Shadowrun material, just the concept of D&D races and magic mixed with modern real world stuff plus sci-fi, then I'm taking that whole thing and throwing it into a distant future of deep space exploration.
I'm not officially using any particular game setting, this is an ad hoc setting created as needed to tell a story. Right now I'm thinking of it as a typical D&D type setting that was once medieval (like Forgotten Realms), they had an industrial age (similar to Eberron or Ptolus), then they got to an equivalent of our modern age of information (which looked like Shadowrun), then technology advanced and they began exploring space (which I'm thinking was like a mix of Dragonstar and Starjammer). This setting is one in which interstellar travel is very difficult, most people never do it, or if they do they never do it more than once. This entire story takes place in a single star system.
The game begins in the town of Diamond Lake at the bottom of a wide valley on a planetoid called Avernus; it has a mean diameter of 666km and features black rocks and red sand, which may have had something to do with the naming of the place.
The asteroid distantly orbits the Wolf Star 359, one of the last outposts of the now dwindling iron-rush that started a few centuries back. The innermost inhabited planet is nearly an ecumenopolis (or so they claim in their travel brochures, though in truth it does still have some open spaces, they're just all being used as garbage dumps, so the travel board doesn't think that should count as open undeveloped land). New Cisco was built on the success of the early pioneers; but that's a long way away from Avernus, a place of outcasts and failures, outlaws and prisoners, pirates and privateers.
The two main businesses here are the mines (mostly copper, some nickel & iron too), and ranching. The animals here are a genetic hybrid of earth cows crossed with alien DNA. These Space Cows are quite hardy and good eatin' too; they have 6 legs and very small heads with mouths at the end of a long tentacle-like stalk that can easily attach to a specialized feeder that supplies them with a patented nutrient blend. Despite their small heads, they still have large necks, which support their massive horns.
There is a vast network of vacuum tubes all over this planetoid, some from down in the mines, and some in every structure on the surface. The air intake from all these vacuum tubes leads to the North Pole Fluid Recycling Center. This is also where all plumbing and electricity comes from, and it's directly connected to the artificial gravity generator in the center of this rock.
Other notable locations aside from Devil's Gulch would include the Federation Factory Farm (where most of the local food comes from), and the mines (which all have railways connecting to the ore refinery), which are not far from the only spaceport on Avernus, Astaroth Station. There are other ranches, farms, privately owned & operated mines, and other miscellaneous inhabitants all over Avernus but they are all far away and not directly involved in our story (though they make fine fodder for backstories).
The PCs are welcome to be inventive with their backstories, as long as they conclude with their characters as free agents, just another bunch of outcasts making their way in this evil little world, probably either by working in the mine itself or in an adjacent capacity of some kind.
Recent Galactic History
Shortly after putting down a massive robot uprising back on Earth, humanity broke out into a galactic civil war. Now the war is over and all of humanity has been consolidated under a single government with multinational corporate sponsorship called the Imperial Federation Incorporated (Imp Fed Inc). Intelligent robots are not trusted (or legally permitted) so the only robots you're likely to see are mindless labor-bots and the like (something like a Fallout Protectron at best).
