Dungeon of the Mad Mage Campaign 2023

In the city of Waterdeep rests a tavern called the Yawning Portal, named after the gaping pit in its common room. At the bottom of this crumbling shaft is a dungeon shunned by all but the most daring adventurers. Known as Undermountain, this dungeon is the domain of the mad wizard Halaster Blackcloak. Long has the Mad Mage dwelt in these forlorn depths, seeding his lair with monsters, traps, and mysteries—to what end is a constant source of speculation--and concern. Now, many factions are sending their agents to Undermountain to see what devious plot Halaster is planting to the demise of Waterdeep. Are you brave (or foolish) enough to explore the most famous and deadliest dungeon of all Faerun?

UPDATE: Currently the characters are 8th level. The party consists of a wizard (evoker), cleric (grave), fighter (dex based battlemaster) and a rogue (swashbuckler).

About myself
I have been playing Dungeons and Dragons since the late 70s when I was a young child. I still remember my first adventure, B1: In Search of the Unknown, especially when a Ghoul paralyzed my Cleric and poked out his eye! Memorable times.

Character Generation
All classes, class features, races and spells from the Core Rulebooks, and the following books are permitted:

• Sword Coast Adventures Guide
• Xanathar's Guide
• Player's Handbook

• Rogue class option Steady Aim (pg 64)
• Ranger class options Deft Explorer, Favored Foe (pg 96)

Roll 20
• We will be using Roll20 OGL character sheets. No DnD beyond import. You will have to make your character in game
• Ability scores are selected using 27 point buy. If you wish to change your character voluntarily and make a new character, your new character will start at a level lower than your current one.
• Hit points are taken as average rounded up.
• Characters will begin with standard starting equipment. Since we are starting at level 5, each character can start with one uncommon magical items. More details about character generation are outlined in the game
• Roll20 Token: In roll20, your character is represented on the battle map by a token. If needed, a token will be provided for you to represent your character on the battle map. If you have one that you would like to use, send it to me via discord. This token will be linked to your character sheet. Please upload artwork to your character sheet or send me artwork you want me to use for your token. If you have not uploaded character art, I will find a generic token for you to use until you find some art you like. A good site to make a token can be found here: http://rolladvantage.com/tokenstamp/ and a video on how to make a token here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xpOTyFKbIk

Character Backstory:
Backstory should be no more than a couple of paragraphs. I won't be reading full length novels on your characters history. Try to tie your background to the story adventure: why you are going into Undermountain. However, I will try my best to work with you about your backstory to tie it to the campaign.
