Everything old is new again...

If you like Old School adventure, but are willing to try something new, this game is for you! I'm an old school (1e AD&D) gamer, but I've tried other systems from time to time. Now, I'm ready to give Dungeon World a try. In the interest of full disclosure, this will be my first game of Dungeon World which I have GM'd, so I am open to any tips and pointers you may have.

Worldbuilding: One of the main principles of Dungeon World is "play to find out," so we will be creating this world together as we go. We are already 4 sessions into the game, so some details have already been worked out, but there is still room to create. Your characters do not need to be friends, but PCs should work together to create a team of some kind. Character Bonds will be worked out in play. You will have true freedom to create the world in which we will adventure. That being said, having come from a more pre-prepped style of play, improvisation will be a skill I will be developing as we go as well. Be prepared for questions from me like, "I don't know - what do you see?"

Tone: Since this is a cooperative process, I want to make sure we're on the same page from the start. I want to have a fun, internally consistent feel of an old school D&D adventure. Internally consistent means a "realistic" fantasy world - one that makes sense, and keeps the spirit of Old School D&D. A lot of the tone will depend on the players, and how you approach your role as participants in the storytelling role.

Story: One pitfall of campaigns is that they rarely actually come to an end. More often, they just fizzle out. I'd like this to be different. I don't have a planned story, but I'm intending this campaign to be of medium length - say, 8-10 sessions (of which 4 have already been completed). To that end, as we are creating the world, we'll want to think about what kind of story to center the campaign around. A quest to find/destroy some ancient treasure? Exploration of an unknown island? The elimination of an evil menace? The possibilities are many, but there should be some way of saying, "We did it!" or "We failed!" And a time to say the quest is over. That doesn't mean the group has to completely disband, but it will be a good time to pause and take a breather.

Rules: The rules will be the standard Dungeon World rules, using the standard Dungeon World classes (you can find them here, or the SRD here). There will be some house rules, because nothing says Old School like house rules! Mainly, I'm going to tweak the xp so you're not leveling up every session, and perhaps some slight tweaking in some of the classes to give them an Old School feel (the Druid, in particular, needs some work, but I've got plans for him).

Application: I am looking for players who are able to participate in the world-creation process, not simply passive bystanders, waiting to be forcefed a story. There will be an application process. If you are interested in participating in this project, please reply to the "Post here to apply!" post below, answering these three questions (word to the wise - I consider following directions important):

  1. Age (approximate): Although this game is not designed with “mature content” in mind (with small children in the house, I run a strictly "PG" table), however, I do require that all players be at least 18 years old.
  2. A few sentences about your favorite roleplaying character/experience
  3. A few sentences about what interests you about this particular game.

From these responses, I will PM potential players. I will accept no more than 5 players, but I will keep a list of those who have applied, if, for any reason, some spots open up. The sessions will run no longer than 3 hours.

Technical Info: This will be a voice campaign with video preferred, but optional. We will use the built in Roll 20 interface for video and audio with Google Hangouts as a backup - whichever gives us better results.

Time and Date: I plan on playing bi-weekly, as my work schedule permits. The time is fairly fixed with the end time a hard stop 3 hours after whatever the local time above is listed for you (I'm in GMT+2 or +3, depending on the time of year, so this is late evening for me). I could possibly start later, but it would mean that each session would be shorter. Attendance is very important to me (another word to the wise), so if you are unable to attend a session, please let me know in advance. I do understand that emergencies come up, but a lackadaisical approach to attendance will be cause for ejection from the game. You have been warned.

Ok, hopefully I’ve answered all your questions, but if you have further questions, feel free to send me a PM.
