A gritty sandbox style campaign in the world of Hyperborea. Characters start out as simple townsfolk and gain power by seeking treasure and conquest. There are no story arcs characters must follow. The campaign's story develops organically based on the choices characters make and how the world reacts to them.
The campaign takes place in the world of Hyperborea. This is a pulp sword and sorcery setting influenced by the work of Robert E. Howard, H. P. Lovecraft, and Clark Ashton Smith. It's a cold and sometimes perpetually dark world where people live in fragmented city states surrounded by a harsh wilderness full of dangerous beasts, both domestic and alien. The land is littered with the remnants of prior civilizations. Ancient cities, dark subterranean caves, and demonic temple ruins are ripe for exploration.
This is an "Old School" campaign adhering to the open world sandbox style of play. To be successful, players must explore, manage resources, and find treasure. Exploration opportunities occur in the form or rumors, finding maps, or being hired to do a job.
Combat encounters are logical, but not always balanced. For example, a wolf encounter will likely be a pack of wolves because that is their nature. Such encounters are not scaled back to make it more balanced for the PCs. It is incumbent upon the PCs to be prepared for or avoid encounters that are too dangerous. Combat dice rolls are always in the open and never fudged.
