Contempt of the Familiar (2)

You have been called to the wastes of Umo. Before you stretches a barren land oozing with tar pits between ruins of bismuth and obsidian. On the ashen horizon beneath a full moon, a lone ziggurat thrums ominously, an aurora of alien light coalescing overhead amid flashes of heat lightning.

You hear a whisper on the wind, a honeyed voice greets you, "Glad you could make it, the veil is sundered, reality unravels, and Hadar nears. Let us overcome the inescapable, to find an end and cure. No need to thank me."

ABOUT US: Married DM/player duo seeking like-minded individuals for a long-term, roleplay-intensive campaign. At this time, we are looking to add one more person to a newly-formed party that has been playing for six sessions. Our group so far consists of five players (plus DM), is mostly female, and is LGBTQ inclusive. Players are passionate about crafting complex characters and learning about each others’, and actively engage in text roleplays and creative prompts (playlists, personality quizzes, &c.) throughout the week between sessions.

CAMPAIGN BASICS: This will be a hybrid voice/text campaign, hosted on Roll20 and using Discord to communicate. Live (voice/text) sessions will take place on Sundays, starting at 12 p.m. CDT and running for 4+ hours. Asynchronous one-on-one text roleplays between characters will occur the remaining days of the week. The campaign is set in an original high fantasy world similar to Faerûn, where most races and classes exist (see character creation guidelines below). Characters will start at level 10 and progress using milestone leveling. Sessions will not be held on weeks any player is unable to attend.

PLAYSTYLE: Slow-paced collaborative storytelling, with an emphasis on roleplay, exploration, and character growth. The open-world style provides players with a lot of autonomy but not much guidance, with a convoluted plot, unstructured quests, and subjective objectives. A campaign where choice is highly valued, not only in the abundance of options, but in the lingering and sometimes unpredictable consequences those decisions have within a shifting and dangerous world -- players are always given enough rope with which to hang themselves. An air of secrecy permeates the narrative, as hidden elements are uncovered by characters with secrets of their own, which may be shared -- or obscured -- as bonds between the party form.

THE PARTY: While we do not necessarily prioritize having a "balanced" party, we want our characters to be unique from one another, with a diverse array of personalities and no class overlap. Our existing lineup is as follows:
A human barbarian: A former mercenary captain, which shows in her aggressive demeanor and survivalist mentality. She's generally quiet, but when she does speak she's sarcastic and rough.
An elf bard: Curious to the point of nosiness, constantly asking questions and writing down everything she observes. She's also a polyglot with a vast knowledge of lore.
A human druid: A noble from the southern kingdom of Nimea, he is thoughtful and reserved and carries himself with the calm assurance of someone confident in themself and their abilities. When he speaks, he seems generally reasonable and respectful, and when silent, his gold eyes seem to miss very little. His main interests seem to be nature in general and flora in particular.
A triton ranger: Generally subdued, preferring to give off an air of calm and put-togetherness. She does her best to think things through, but doesn't always come to the correct conclusion ("the risk I took was calculated, but man, am I bad at math" meme).
A tiefling rogue: Paranoid, depressed, and prone to talking to his driftglobe (god?). In serious denial about his hero complex, but always looking for new people to protect. Likes: drinking, making deals, debating, and walking in front. Dislikes: talking about his feelings.

PLAYER QUALIFICATIONS: Enthusiastic about voice and text roleplay, with consistent availability Sundays and throughout the week to fully participate in it. Inspired by the prospect of playing a complex three-dimensional character that engages with others and grows throughout the campaign. Invested in gradually unraveling a labyrinthine plot through attention to detail and conversation with layered NPCs. Strong at communicating and able to mentally separate characters from players. Capable of creatively addressing conflict, embracing flawed characters, and exploring inter-party friction at a natural pace. Curious about delving into party members' backstories and developing over time into a found family dynamic. Willing to play a class not already represented in the group. Interested in participating in regular character development prompts and Discord discussions. Committed to following the adventures of a single character through the course of a long-term narrative. Over the age of 18 and comfortable with dark themes and mature content. Welcoming to party members of diverse cultures, experience levels, and identities (including LGBTQ). Not a murderhobo.

APPLICATION PROCESS: If interested, please fill out the short questionnaire found in the Applications thread. DO NOT apply without a character concept -- the characters that will be the “best fit” for the world/party are ones their players are excited about. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out via private message. We will be evaluating applications until the tentative start date listed, and may contact shortlist candidates with additional follow-up questions. Once we have made our final decision, this listing will deactivate; until then, we welcome your applications!
