Faerûn's Frigid North | Rime of the Frostmaiden

Embark on a fresh, yet familiar journey through the world of Faerûn. Fight back the forces that seek to engulf the Ten-Towns in eternal winter and restore order to this fractured nation; or, perhaps, your actions will ultimately push this icy dale to its grizzly fate. Life hangs in the balance, resting precariously on the knife's edge.

This adventure takes place north of the Spine of the World in the icy reaches of northern Faerûn, in a frigid expanse few dare to explore, let alone inhabit. It is known as Icewind Dale. This icy land of windswept tundra recently became locked in a perpetual, dark winter without reprieve.
Each night before midnight, a shimmering curtain of light sweeps across the land—a beautiful aurora that illuminates the night sky and fades before dawn. This powerful magic prevents the next day’s sun from rising above the horizon, turning midday into twilight and trapping Icewind Dale in winter’s dark embrace, with no sunlight or warmth to melt the snow and ice.

The people of Icewind Dale have learned to fear this event; they call it the Everlasting Rime. This prolonged winter, which has gone on for more than two years, threatens to doom not just the flickering lights of civilization known as Ten-Towns but also the indigenous flora and fauna that need sunlight and the change of seasons to survive.

This is a high-fantasy, serious-roleplay adventure through the Icewind Dale: Rime of a Frostmaiden. I've been playing Dungeons & Dragons for five years now, though I have ten years of Roleplay experience. I certainly don't claim to be the best Dungeon Master but the players I've had over the years expressed their joy for my storytelling!

Your Characters will start the game in Bryn Shander, a walled town perched atop a cold, lonely, wind-lashed hill. Preferably, most character's will be travelling Northward and into Icewind Dale; we can discuss motivations, plots and other facets of your character's once the application process is complete! One or two characters may be from Icewind Dale but that isn't a guarantee; a lot of this adventure is based on the exploration and discovery of this land that's detached from the rest of Faerûn. Also, just if you can, please tell me your favourite Monster as part of your 'about you' section so I know you read everything. This Module isn't going to be played entirely by the book; a few story beats will change depending on character backstories and your actions, as the book itself doesn't account for a lot of actions and functions primarily on railroading.

Mechanically, we will be running with the D&D 5e System.
Starting at Level 1, using Stat Rolling. However, there are a few house rules;

  • Every week I'll issue a challenge to the players, usually to further the game's worldbuilding or character development. Challenges would be things along the lines of; a letter from your character's perspective, creating a fake 'magic item' thematically in line with your character, detailing a day of celebration in a certain town. These challenges will act as the primary source of Inspiration, with each week's victor receiving a point. This is to foster -friendly- competition and has gone well in my previous games.
  • Inspiration, while still working in the regular way, has the added use of allowing a player to trade their point for a mundane item they might feasibly have.
  • Potions are a Bonus Action to consume, but only three potions may be used per-combat in this way. [Consider the potions as a quick item slot!]
  • Death Saves are rolled in secret! The Player would toggle on the 'to-GM' option, this is to avoid metagame.
  • Players start with a single Feat of their choosing.
  • Players may willingly lower their initiative at the start of combat.
  • When rolling for HP, if a player rolls below their average, they may take average; Dungeons & Dragons isn't a game made in mind for a Barbarian that rolls two on every level-up.
  • Homebrew is -allowed-, but is very, very strictly regulated. You won't receive a homebrew Race or Class or Sub-Class. Spells, Weapons, Flavour Changes and such can pass by me for inspection! I want to allow you guys to explore as much as you'd like without compromising the game's balance.

With all that said, I wish you luck! You can apply below and ask any questions you might have.
