Adventures In Uvirat

I'm Zach, I have been running d&d games since I was 17, and for a bit, I took a break from fantasy, after four years in 3 separate campaigns it was getting old. But after a sufficient break, I am deeply in need of another campaign in a fantasy setting. I make my campaigns all from scratch, and I like to weave my players' backstory into the actual running of the plot at Large. For this I need three things:

1.) a clear and interesting motivation that is not so pressing that it needs to be dealt with immediately, something which in my experience almost always leads to the party trampling on each other in order to deal with their trauma first.

2.) someone who is good at speaking and improv, playing the characters in my opinion the most important and fun part of the d&d with combat being something on the side.

3.) a backstory that contains, crucially, a lump of clay. Your character cannot have solved your backstory, there needs to be a lack of information. Perhaps you do not know who or what killed your parents you only know that they turned up a hundred miles away stripped of their armor but not their money or their weapons. Preferably not a character who is being hunted as that often leads to a very simple and obvious solution which is to run away. I know this is not entirely clear and it's difficult to say what is and is not an acceptable lump of clay I'm happy to answer questions.

As I mentioned before I believe it is the most important thing in a Dungeons and Dragons campaign to engage in social situations, I have run campaigns for quite a long time and threw out for years and three campaigns I have found combat occurs maybe once every three to four sessions. Of course, if players wanted to they could engage in combat every session I think it is preferable for players to attempt to go around situations with their words. If this is not your idea of fun if the best part of Dungeons and Dragons to you is slinging spells smacking guys, and murdering maidens you will not have a good time.

If your idea of fun is sneaking into the cities Patriarch's home and discovering his journal and looking through it in order to find information to blackmail him so that he will allow you to engage in activities that would otherwise render you persona non grata, this is exactly the game for you.

I should note 1 more thing, my boyfriend will be a player in this game, we are gay and if that's a problem then, of course, you need not apply.

In terms of what I need from you.

1.) your name, at least the one you go by. And age

2.) your favorite of the 6 core stats

3.) your characters name

4.) character class

5.) TLDR backstory

6.) full but still vague backstory (I will want to run through and change/add some things to make it feel more connected to the world.

7.) if you know of the 5 man band archetype, which role would your character fill, and what do you see them doing in a typical session. (link to 5 man band trope https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FiveManBand) They don't have to fit perfectly into any archetype but whichever one or two are the closest, if none apply, simply answer the second question.

Below you will find information on the World At Large, if you want to work some of that in or if you are just curious you are welcome to all that you are not required to.

Now for the fun part, the world. So in terms of the races or the species as is way more appropriate, there are several major ones.

The tritons who live in the Sondarien Pirate Council which is more akin to a weird Merchant Republic. They do a lot of piracy and they are excellent sailors renowned for their skill. Meaning of the spices eaten in the world as well as many other useful luxury goods are found and shipped out of as well as grown in the Sondarian Islands.

Humans, this is a group that primarily makes up the Westhalian Exarchate, The Brondarian Theocracy, The Chrysolian Triarchy, and the Viceroyalty of Bellotharia. They are also in general everywhere, in most places most towns will have at least 25% human population although it's often more.

Dwarves in this world are seafaring, they have large Turtle ships, which you can look up for reference, pioneering black powder weapons in arquebuses and ship-based artillery, how many dwarves do mine, the main island of King Ironmane contains one of the tallest mountains on the planet which also incredibly resource dense.

Next is the Tabaxi, they make up the Testralian Federation, they are also seafaring although slightly less so than either the tritons or the dwarves, they are often merchants or recently working in factories and new manufacturies.

Then there are the Elves, of the Serene Republic of Celestine, primarily elves are agrarian in a sense, they maintain vast orchards and grow fruit which are worked by a large part of the populace. Most elves are hesitant to leave home and those that do often come back fairly quickly, in the republic it is seen as unsettling for an elf to go about traveling for more than a couple of years.

And finally, the Drow in Nyeth Tirion, in this world drow are able to get over their sunlight sensitivity relatively quickly and are one of the few races which have actual dark vision. The island which they inhabit is actually a circle of hills around a deep depression a gash in the ground that reaches all the way to the Underdark one of the places, if not the only place, where the sunlight touches Underdark soil. They extract resources from the Underdark trading with those species which are less inclined to leave the abyss. These goods are moved out through tunnels which primarily exit on the main island, the largest of these tunnels is called the "Land Scar". Drow nobility control these tunnels, with larger tunnels symbolizing higher status.

The exact details of the rest of the world I am going to keep quiet. So that I can edit them in order to fit your stories into them. Although there are some things that are worth knowing.

About 50 years ago the Chrysolian Triarchy, split apart into a massive Civil War, before then it was in control of the entire continent, most of the islands to the North and South, as well as the large central island. After the civil war ended, it was re-formed and they have begun to push back against the opportunistic countries which took their territory during a time of weakness. There is not much of the way of a Navy in the Triarchy which makes controlling their borders incredibly difficult as they have to patrol every inch of coastline because they are surrounded by three large Naval powers.

The Chrysolian Triarchy had a state religion that worshipped a God of War a god of Commerce and a god of fields and farming. The Brondarian theocracy was a religious movement that expanded the pantheon and brought it into more control over the country which revolted in the middle of the Civil War.

The Westhalian Exarchate was a colony of humans from a long time ago who are currently locked in a very long-standing and painful struggle with the Serene Republic.

The Testralian Federation is made up of a number of city-states on the island as well as the rivers which they typically arrange themselves around, which have come together and are experiencing something of an early Industrial Revolution.
