Welcome to Esteria
A homebrewed world of my own making, filled with magic and mysteries, but also plots and intrigue, lest us not forget murder and deception...
I am looking for players to create a long-term roleplaying group to be played weekly, though there is a time set up, there is still wiggle room there both on days and times, in order to accomodate as many players as possible.
My game is a complete homebrew, I have created the world, several races, and all of the lore accompanied by it. If you are a diehard DnD lorefan, you might be disappointed as to how I rule the fey, elven history, gods, the planes, and pretty much all of that. I do still use -most- of the races from the books, albeit reflavoured to fit into this world.
Also, there are two points to keep in mind about my game: It is high fantasy, but still with dark tones. While 'dark and gritty' is not something that describes my game, I do sometimes depict death, murder or torture ('sometimes' is the keyword), that's why I would describe it as having dark tones, rather than it being a dark game. It is still colourful and magical out in the wild, and the cities tends to have a more human-centric focus with their own politics depending on where you are. None of this are things you need to be focused on, but you need to be okay with it being in the game.
Esteria has tons of lore, and if you are someone who likes worldbuilding then that is just very welcomed. I will do my best to help explain all of it to you if you ask, and there's tons of information avaliable to read if you're interested in that (wayy to much to post here).
This is neither a happy, friendly anything-goes campaign with joke characters or magical half-breed pixiegnomes, nor is it a dark and gritty murder-of-the-day story or setting. While it is high fantasy, that doesn't not exclude it from having realistic consequences to your actions, or that people within it aren't supposed to behave and act as they should in any given situation. Of course joking is fine both in and out of character, so is making a character that is either naive and upbeat, or a dark and brooding character, but please don't have any misconceptions about the world itself, or that it would twist to suit your character.
This is a dangerous world, but not overly lethal (no character deaths yet). It is a colourful world, but not cartoony. It can be a brutal world, but that doesn't reign supreme. It can have moments of both horror and darkness, but it is not grimdark or gothic. Most of the times, it would depend on where in the world you are, and what you're doing. Consider Faerûn, in the hands of someone that took away some of the whimsical elements and threw in just a touch of darkness in approperiate areas, and I'd say that might be what you'd find here.
First of all, you need to be okay with a few things - Your character might die. That actually hasn't happened yet, but this is a very real possibility, especially for adventurers that goes out tempting fate daily.
You need to be okay with the fact that your character might get mutilated or crippled (which has BARELY happened yet), and if it does, that does not spell the end of their stories. They could still live on, overcome their setbacks and make great stories out of it (You know, up until they find high level healing magic and fixes that).
You need to be okay with some uncomfortable themes such as death, torture or suffering. Depending on where your character finds themselves, this is a very real possibility, and some heavy themes could find themselves in the game.
And you need to be okay with that I am aboslutely not going to give you a victory on a silver platter. If you set out to accomplish something, it's up to you to do it. I am not the kind of DM that will just let you succeed regardless of what you do. Things can go bad, things may be overlooked that leads to worse outcomes, a magic item may be cursed, hell your stuff might get stolen. I know this is upsetting for some people, so I need you to be aware that this is a very real possibility in my game. Other than that, I would want you to be tactful during serious moments and not just want to high-five the king because of lolz, keep in mind that dialogue also have consequences. If you are okay with all of these happening (albeit very occassionally), then I would love to have you in my game, and just to make sure you've actually read this, please include the name of my world somewhere in your application. If you're interested in making a fun, interesting and/or complex character that's all very welcome. If you're interested in making a murder-hobo with no relatives, friends or duties then definitely less so... Roleplayers welcome, rollplaying rules-lawyers take a seat and wait to be called?
If you're okay with all of the things above (Or even if that is what you've been looking for) then I should tell you what you can expect from me. While I have described that I might be tough and dark at times, I want you to know that I am also fair, and I reward good roleplay, creative problemsolving and impressive looking moments. You want your character to do something real cool? Alright let's roll some dice and see what happens, and if it works you better believe I'm going to let that awesomeness shine through, and that every NPC around would be flabbergasted. You want to be a sexy, seducing charmer? My my, I'm sure that's going to work wonders (just don't be surprised if we just fade to black). Is your character beyond saving, and really about to die? Let's hope it doesn't come to that, but if it does, I will pull out all the stops and give them a heroic, defiant last stand! (Up until you find someone to ressurect them...? Or, you know, if they died of foodpoisoning, hard to make that heroic, I guess...)
As a DM, I take my world seriously, but I want you to have fun in it. There are some things that just won't work in it, or races that wouldn't exist, but I will try to work with you to make a character you're really going to like, and stories you can remember for a long time.
That said, I will also put in proper consequences to your actions, for if they didn't exist then why am I even here? If you do something really stupid, you're not going to be handed a get-out-of-jail-free card. If your character is getting really low health in a battle, enemies aren't just going to leave you alone and start attacking the tank instead.
Lastly, I do add houserules, often for realism or to change something to fit my world, but this is also rather seldom, and most of the time it's by-the-book. There are just a few of them, and none meant to just make your adventuring harder, and I can let you know about it if you wish to join.
The first point is; get back to the top and read this shit. But generally, you need to be okay with the possibility of bad things happening to your character, and there's going to be fun roleplay to be had.
