PULP CTHULHU: THE DARING STORY OF THE TWO-HEADED SERPENT

Two-Headed Serpent is an action-packed Pulp Cthulhu campaign set in the year 1933, which sees the heroes traveling across the world facing off against a massive conspiracy. The emphasis is, above all else, on pulp action and daring deeds.

Notice: We are already several sessions in and some fairly strong dynamics have emerged. However, we'd love to pick up another couple of players, so I've reopened the LFG.

  • In this campaign, your heroes find themselves working for the medical aid organization Caduceus, based out of New York City and founded by the enigmatic former businessman Joshua Meadham.
  • The first mission the players will go on takes them to the forests of Bolivia, where the Chaco War has had a profound impact on those caught in the crossfire during ongoing fighting.
  • Pulp heroes in Two-Headed Serpent will journey across the world, probing ancient temples, laboratories, fighting against the forces of darkness which threaten everything the heroes hold dear.

So what's this campaign like?

  • This campaign is positively filled to the brim with pulpy action goodness.
  • The villains twirl their mustaches. This game is filled with improbable coincidences, bizarre characters, overconfident villains with half-baked plans.
  • You will sometimes have fun with things in a way you might not in regular Call of Cthulhu, as you play up the ridiculous elements that might appear during play.
  • This campaign has a pretty wide set of touchstones across several chapters: The Mummy (1999), classic gangster flicks, Indiana Jones, The Prisoner (1967), Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's novel The Lost World (1912), and even more sophisticated literary touchstones like The Heart of Darkness and The Grapes of Wrath.

What's the difference between regular Call of Cthulhu 7th edition and this Pulp Cthulhu variant?

  • One of the biggest differences is that the average Call of Cthulhu investigator is a regular person with a regular personality, while the heroes of Pulp Cthulhu are larger-than-life action heroes.
  • Your heroes should have bombastic personalities. If they're smart, they're a genius. If they're a pilot, they might brag about it. If they're a tough guy, they might be a hard-nosed veteran boxer or a former military sharp-shooter. If they're a detective, they're hard-boiled.
  • A pulp hero is capable of regularly facing down many of the monsters that arrive at the conclusion of regular Call of Cthulhu to kill nearly everyone.
  • One of the side-effects of the intended style of play in a Pulp Cthulhu game is that you will rarely, if ever, miss clues--and clues will rarely be subtle in meaning.
  • The uses for Luck have been greatly expanded compared to regular Call of Cthulhu, and you will regain your Luck with much greater frequency.
  • In stark contrast to a regular Call of Cthulhu game, you are encouraged and expected to solve problems in creative fashion. You'll be expected to attempt wild stunts that would be impossible in real life.

Final notes

  • I won't hew exactly to all the rules in the book. Combats in particular will be fairly narrative, taking place as a back-and-forth between Keeper and players.
  • In our server, we all try to be friends. When you join, we hope that you'll contribute to a fun and positive atmosphere. :)
