Open Legend Playtest Series

First open beta playtest for Open Legend RPG (http://www.openlegendrpg.com)

Some features of the system include:

  • Instead of dice rolls being gradually undermined by stacked bonuses, rolling lots of dice is part of the fun, gradually enabling your character to make huge total rolls and generally kick ass.
  • Modularity is a built-in feature of the game system rather than being something that is reserved for the game designers to meticulously dole out and invent over time (e.g. what we've come to expect from many expansion rules that grant the same or similar mechanic to different classes)
  • Character creation is 100% custom, there are no rigid classes, rather the abilities of each class are feats with prerequisites that can be met and purchased by any character that chooses to invest in those abilities.
  • There will is a living database of feats, banes, and boons (status effects) that can be searched, evolved, and grow over time. These can be found at: http://www.openlegendrpg.com/feats, http://www.openlegendrpg.com/banes, http://www.openlegendrpg.com/boons
  • Side-effects of magic and martial attacks are put on a level playing field allowing, heroes of all specialties to have a range of options in contributing to a dynamic and interesting combat. These status effects are called banes and boons, their effects are reminiscent of spells, but many of them can also be invoked through martial attacks, e.g. "slowed" could also be invoked with an arrow shot to the leg or an icy blast of magic.
  • Open Legend RPG is open-source, built from the ground up with community and third-party publishers in mind. Development is transparent, with the source code available on Github (http://github.com), and the hope there will be improvement by the people playing it. It is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY), a license friendly to commercial contributions from third parties.
