The Days After Dread

About this Listing.

I am looking for a group of 4-5 players to join in this adventure! The game is intended to be run weekly with the goal of starting players at level 2 and continue through to around level 13, and perhaps beyond.

About the Type of Game, I'll be Running.

First off, I realise there is a lot of text below. It is all intended to give you a good idea about the setting, style of game, and a little about myself. I would encourage you to at least read this section of text, so that we all are on the same page.
This game is intended to be run as a sandbox.
Meaning: I'll give you and your fellow players a world and you are welcome to do what you like with it! An overarching story will be played out that will require the players to opt into certain premises and adventure plot hooks, however the way in which I have structured it should keep it from feeling as if put on rails.
I tend to prefer organic storytelling, where players dictate how they go about interacting with the world. In my experience this allows for a fairly-high roleplay-based game, though with more mundane scenes such as shopping often being expedited with meta discussions, unless either player or DM has an alternative goal in mind. It also allows for some sessions that become heavily tied to dungeon crawling/combat.
Most importantly I want this game to be with a welcoming and friendly group, regardless of anyone's gender identity, race, sexual orientation, or anything else on those lines. I've been lucky enough to play in and run some great games using roll20 with the best people, but I know that's not true for everyone. So yeah, keep that in mind!

About the World.

So it was, that the world shattered. Fields grew barren, rivers ran dry, the undead rose from their slumber, and the world began her final days. Valiant heroes dropped their swords, turning their backs on the people they once protected. Civilisations collapsed in on itself.
And lo, when it was over, only small pockets of civilizations remained. Isolated and scattered. They would be forced to start over again, guided only by the ruins of the world that had passed.
It is now 700 years after the end of the world, and although not without its own share of catastrophes, life for mortal-kind have begun to resemble a semblance of normalcy. The individual realms remain hidden from one and another, and the space between them filled with cursed lands and untold dangers.
Our story begins in the Dawn Realm. A land of lush forests and picturesque mountaintops. Nestled between steep precipices and tall mountain ranges, the realm is buffered from the cursed lands lurking just out of reach. There is a tranquillity to the land, one wrapped in a silent melancholy. Echoed in the ruins of a not-so-distant past.
The Days of Dread arrive at the end of each year, through the rising of a distant dark-sun, and the death of 5% of the population as they fade into nothingness as embers and motes of light. 5% more of the population are marked to share the same fate at the next year’s end– their eyes turning to an ember-red. This annual cycle of death has become a sombre reality for the people of the Dawn Realm; each being forced to reconcile with loss and their own inevitable doom from a young age.

About the DM, me!

A little about myself! My name is Chris, I'm 28, originally from South Africa, and have been living in the UK for about 4 years now. I'm a research scientist - which means I'm a push-over for creative/scientific solutions to in-game challenges, but perhaps more importantly that I work regular hours; so, I should rarely have conflicts from work that would cause me to postpone a session.
I enjoy trying to deliver, for my player, a nice bundle of: compelling combat on custom and high-quality battle-maps, a charming world with fleshed-out NPCs, and intense quests mixed with some more whacky light-hearted moments.
I’ve been lucky enough to have pretty good success running D&D in the past and am hoping to continue that luck here!

Interested?

If you are at all interested, leave an application below in the appropriate forum! I have also written up a few forums discussing things like house rules, (potential) FAQs, and a forum for you to ask any questions you might have.
This game is intended for folks 18+, not because the content inappropriate but, because I want everyone to feel comfortable with each other.
Do not feel hesitant if you are new to the game and/or roll20, I am more than happy to help players learn and love online D&D!
Applications will stay open until Late April.
