The classic adventure module, now converted to the 5th Edition rules!
You must be foolish, arrogant, desperate, or all three to seek the Tomb of Horrors. The Men and Gnomes of the valley dare not approach that accursed mound. Those villages which lie nearby huddle under a shadow of fear, but the natives will happily tell you what they know of the Tomb. It seems to give them relief to talk about it.
The Tomb is the resting place of the dread lich, Acererak. That in itself should give you pause, for was Acererak not the most evil and powerful of all necromancers? Was it not Acererak who twisted the Folk of the Hills into the wretched Ur-Goblins and set them lose upon the flailing corpse of the Silver Empire? Do not the Church's records show how a hundred thousand Templars, blades shining with righteous potency, crashed against his black fortress ''Veş Berga'' only to have their brains turned to dust and their bodies turned to machines?
Even when the wrath of the gods was set lose against that villain, Acererak escaped judgement. As Heaven's Devourer crushed his domain, he had his most lore-wise servants build him a refuge. This was the Tomb of Horrors, where folk say Acererak dwells still in undeath.
His reputation would be enough to keep explorers away from his Tomb, but for one thing: Acererak was no doubt the wealthiest fellow in the history of the West. No dragon's hoard can compare to what must lie beneath the earth in his haunted lair.
It is a fortune beyond reckoning, and you would not be the first to die seeking it. Who knows? Perhaps you will be the ones to defeat the Dead Lord and lift this shadow from our country. I would pray for you, but I doubt whether the gods have any power in that dark place.
