A Saga of Snow and Ice

~PROLOGUE~
As the camera fades in there is a small purple flower just barely poking out of a fine dusting of snow. In the background we hear the faint sound of rhythmic splashing. The flower grows fuzzy as the camera focuses behind to a Norse longship beaching on the shore. One might expect for a couple dozen fierce angry men wielding shields and axes to leap from the ship yelling and leading a charge to raid, pillage, and sack the land... but this is not the case. Instead a single older man with a hard, scarred face appears over the bow of the ship and jumps down, crushing the small purple flower. Behind him, a few other faces appear including a woman and a couple of children. The edge of the man's mouth turns ever so slightly upward, with the barest hint of a smile as he looks back at his ship. At last the camera sweeps back behind him and shows us the desolate, empty landscape behind him as the words "A Saga of Snow and Ice" appears as the screen once again fades to black.

~THE GM~
I am interested in running a Sagas of the Icelanders game here on Roll20. I have never used Roll20 for gaming before, but none of my friends locally have any interest in trying out the system so I thought I would turn to Roll20 and see how it is. Anyways, I have been playing and GMing roll playing games for 15 years. I am also a history major who specialized in medieval history, but I am by no means an expert on the Viking Age. I am here to have fun and tell an interesting and dynamic story together. I have yet to play Sagas, so it would be a definite learning experience for not only me, but the players as well. I have a very busy schedule that includes working in rural Alaska for two weeks at a time, so the schedule for the game would be rather sporadic, but I am aiming for at least twice a month if possible on Mondays.

~THE GAME~
The Sagas of the Icelanders is set in early 10th century Iceland, a couple of generations after the Norse settled the island. You as players will be taking part in not only the daily activities of a small Icelandic farm, but also helping to shape the world around you as is usual in an Apocalypse World System game. I am aiming for believably over complete historiography, but some at least basic familiarity with Norse society and social customs will be extremely helpful. Be aware that this is going to require creativity from the whole group, especially during the first session when we create the world around us that we will be taking part of.

~THE PLAYERS~
I am looking for 3-4 players who can be relatively flexible with scheduling and are interested in a game that is more or less collaborative storytelling. This is NOT a hack and slash, power leveling, kill the dragon kind of campaign... I am open to the idea of accepting first time roll players as long as you are willing to learn. Since I've never used Roll20 before, I am still learning the best way to run the game, but it sounds like most people use audio over Skype so I think that is what we will be using. Being familiar with the rules of Sagas of the Icelanders and possessing a copy of the rulebook would be also be helpful as well as knowledge or at least a willingness to learn about Norse culture, history, and society during the Viking age. If you are interested, please respond under the "Interested Players" topic below with why you think you would be a good fit with the group including roleplaying experience, exposure to Norse history, and what role you would find to be the most interesting. Be aware, I am not allowing the wanderer or the monster for first characters, but they certainly could come up as the story progresses!
