Horror at Havel's Cross

This is a one-shot adventure designed for an average level 2 party. Please read the letter "In Defense of Knowledge" and decide if this sounds like an interesting job for your adventurer to take on. I would prefer that you import your character before the game begins so I can get set up and we don't waste a lot of time. I've DM'ed this around a table, but I'm looking forward to trying it here on Roll20. I think it will be fun!

In Defense of Knowledge: A Job

To madam scholar (and Friends),

Hello. My name is Professor Winsome Landy. You probably won't remember me, but I attended a lecture that your master gave at Zarditar's University where I was then researching the foundation and variations of different Goblin origin narratives, a vexing task to say the least. I remember the talk that was given because it related to (and, to some degree, validated) my theory that Goblin folklore is an extension of and bastardization of other primitive, humanoid cultures. In fact we can see parallels between the stories told by barbarians, kobolds, goblins, and even some tribes of orc, suggesting that . . .well, I seem to have gotten off subject! When we meet, remind me to stay focused on the task at hand!

But back to my original point: we met briefly. You asked me to bring you tea, which I did. Although, I did wonder at the propriety of that request given my position as a published, fully-tenured academic and yours as an apprentice magic user. But then, your master's reputation does carry a significant weight. And from our brief discourse, I was immediately made aware of your daunting store of knowledge. For every book I mentioned, you mentioned five that I hadn't even heard of before!

It is with our mutual love of learning in mind that I hope that you will consider my request. I have recently gotten word from my research team that they have found a valuable relic at our dig site, just three days journey from where I write to you today. We don't anticipate too much trouble, but given the importance of this find, we have decided to contract an escort party capable of safely delivering it and our team back to the civilized parts of this region.

The area is fairly dangerous, populated as it is with Goblins and wolf packs prowling about, but, given what I have heard about your recent exploits at The Wizard's Tower Brewing, I know that you and your friends are up for the job. However, I would consider picking up additional members of your team as you see fit. We are prepared to offer each of you a healthy reward in exchange for your services.

Plus, this will give us a chance to talk books and discuss my theories as we travel!

If you choose to accept this quest, prepare accordingly. We need to travel light, but we will be moving through forest and field, and should fortify ourselves against hunger, thirst, threats of the wild, and the elements. Prepare your gear and spells accordingly.

Send word ahead as soon as you can. My colleagues anticipate our departure from the Spring Shoot Inn by the 15th of Kythorn. They are eager to return from the wilds.

With much respect, admiration, and anticipation,

Professor Winsome Landy
Master of Anthropology
