The Stairs of Ascension

UPDATE: This game has been running for a few weeks, but we now have a couple of empty slots that we need to fill. Anyone coming into the game would only have missed a few sessions and wouldn't need to worry too much about catching up. The information below is a little outdated, but it's still relevant to the campaign.

Five hundred years ago the God King climbed the Stairs of Ascension and the world stopped turning.

Our story begins in a world that has begun to lose hope. It has spent centuries under the rule of an all powerful tyrant and none save the eldest of Elves remember any other life. The Old Gods are gone, with only a few devout followers remaining, and those scattered to the wind and hunted by the One Church. Any sovereign nations that dared resist have long since been destroyed, as none can stand before the might of a God. Those who submitted fare little better, forced to suffer the whims of occupying armies and the demigods which lead them. It seems inevitable that there will come a day when people will not even whisper of an end to tyranny, not even hope for it, for they could not imagine anything else. But it is not yet that day.

However philosophical matters of hope and tyranny are no concern of yours at the moment. All of the party members are currently in the port city of Pyr. The city gates are currently closed, and none are allowed in or out without the express permission of the city's ruler. The rumors on the street say that Pyr has become a den of heresy, with clerics and paladins of the Old Gods founding secret underground Temples. And that the Inquisition has been sent to purge the taint, by whatever means necessary. Of course those are just rumors and streetwise adventurers such as yourself aren't keen on giving them much credence. At least that's what you might have said were you not currently sitting across a rickety wooden table staring into the unblinking eyes of one of the Inquisition's Purifiers. The man, at least you assume he was a man at one point, leans forward to rest his blood stained hands on the table, gives a lopsided smile, and says "So, what brings you to Pyr?"

Here's what you need to know about the game itself.

It's D&D 5E, if that wasn't clear from the listing.

The game will run weekly at the time above, which roll20 will convert to your time zone. Session length will vary slightly depending on the circumstances, I'd estimate an average of four hours, but don't be surprised if we run long or short on occasion. Please do not apply for the game if you aren't sure if you can consistently attend.

We'll use Discord to talk. Even if you've never used it before it's very simple, so don't worry about that.

I don't anticipate very much adult content in the campaign, outside of "adult language". Mostly I check the box so that kids don't apply. I remember myself at fourteen, trust me you don't want that in a game.

I don't mind taking new players, 5e is easy, you'll pick it up quickly.

Character creation is 27 point buy, the party will start at level one. All official 5e books are allowed, so are most unearth arcanas. Except for Mystic, don't even ask. I'm also usually game for homebrew things that people want to use, provided that they aren't stupid or overpowered, and after I review them of course.

Also please note that there is a lot more world information that I did not address here, concerning factions, history, and important locations and people. I didn't include it because it would have made this way too long, but it'll be available inside the game once people join.

So if you are interested in the game please create a post below which includes two things. First a little information about yourself, not much, just tell me who you are. Second, and more importantly, a character backstory. I spent a lot of time discussing Gods and tyrants, as that is the focus of the campaign, but there is a lot more to the world, so don't feel pigeonholed and think that your character must be connected to any of those things. Basically do whatever you like for the backstory, and I'll tell you if any of it conflicts with anything or needs to be changed for some reason, though I doubt it will.

Every time I write one of these it ends up too long and I never feel like I covered everything, so I'm just going to end it here. Let me know if you have any questions, otherwise post below if you are interested.
