The world is changing.
That is what all the portents point to. People are reading it in the stars, on runes carved into animal bone, or in fitful dreams. Change. You can feel it in the air, the uncertainty. Whatever is going to be changing it doesn't seem like it's going to be an improvement.
Humanoids attack the outskirts of civilization almost daily now, long-reliable fisheries are running dry, and farms that once produced enough produce to feed entire cities find their yields at all time lows. People are getting desperate. Desperate enough to join the high-risk, high-reward adventurer's guilds.
There's a saying that the only thing you need for an adventuring guild to take you in is a pulse. While that might not necessarily be far from the truth, an adventurer's life will almost always be fraught with peril, and only the hardy, strong, or downright insane stay in the game for very long.
But even the guilds are growing desperate, taking any job that passes their way. It's one of the reasons your waiting here at the edge of a deep and dark forest. Participating in a job miles away from the guild and home that probably isn't even going to pay very well.
What have you gotten yourselves into?
