Prep for the Curse of Strahd

Introduction

This pro campaign will use both homebrew and Roll20 modules. As with all games in my multiverse, it begins in the double walled city of Obsidian Bay. There are lots of distractions in a medieval city with 28,000 people. Strahd has found a way to live forever. A powerful alchemist has created magic lanterns and mystics have harnessed the aura of mechanical reproduction. Hunting down Strahd is only the beginning.
My version of Curse of Strahd is a true sandbox that borrows influences from video games, films and current events.

What is this game?

We will be playing the official Roll20 Curse of Strahd.

Who am I?

Of all the things I do in life, I am best at being a Dungeon Master. My players learn to fight as a unit with pack tactics for advantage, and how to fully embody the individuality of their character. I pay close attention to the balance between individual and party dynamics. Everyone gets to be the protagonist of a scene at some point. Every story that I write is waiting for you to fill in the blanks.

"Just because you are a character doesn't mean you have character" The Wolf - Pulp Fiction (Tarantino, 1994)

I am a Dungeon Master with a film degree. Dan Harmon's Story Circle concept is a useful way to apply Joseph Campbell's Hero with a Thousand Faces theory to TTRPG.

Dan Harmon, Writer of Rick and Morty, Community, and HarmonQuest has developed a theory that he applies in his writing.

1:) A character is in a place of COMFORT
2:) But they WANT something
3:) So they go somewhere WEIRD
4:) ADAPT to it
5:) They GET what they wanted
6:) But they have to PAY
7:) They RETURN
8:) Having CHANGED

Every game that I run focuses on your character's development using this theory. This makes my games feel more like a Rick and Morty episode than a video game. Curse of Strahd was developed with character leveling in mind.

Let's game.

Rules

Anyone who talks over others will be muted in Discord. Rule lawyers can do their adjudication over text chat. If everyone wants to talk at the same time, we will roll initiative. I encourage others to express themselves, as long as they are mature enough to respect other's boundaries.
