Westward: A Story of the West Marches

To the west there is freedom. To the west we go. To the west there is treasure. To the west we go. To the west there is death. To the West we go.

Westward

This is an ongoing West Marches style game with sessions nearly every week and multiple DMs. New players and characters are welcome. Ignore the 'next game on' date, as this was required by Roll20 and not indicative of when we're playing exactly.

Our Usual Times of Play revolve around Central European Time (Berlin Time) as we are a EU based group. Our Most common day of play has been Thursdays at 7pm (19:00) Berlin Time (CET). Please consider this before applying.

The Game itself is a bit more on the Deadly side of things. The West, where the majority of the game takes place, is an unforgiving wild-lands which was driven to chaos by a great Calamity. Those who venture out into it take great personal risk....but the greater the risk, the greater the rewards. The core-ethos of our game is what we call "Brutally Fair" in that the DMs will be fair with the consequences and outcomes of encounters. Intelligent enemies will act intelligently, and taking foolhardy risks will most likely get you slain.

Just as a note: The Nature of the game is less about Roleplay than it is combat and exploration....but that's only insofar as the Players Drive it. Roleplay is certainly an option, but its up to the Players.

The Legion

When you join Westward, you are also joining The Legion of United Gamers. This is the Discord Server and community where we do all of our coordination. On the discord, if accepted, you will see a number of channels with information about the Community, Westward, and other games. People who are accepted into the Legion/Westward are also allowed to join the other games being ran, provided they meet the requirements and it is okay with those running.

The Legion and our games are all Inclusive of all people's, regardless of Race, Creed, Gender, Ethnicity or otherwise.

We are VERY LGBTQA+ friendly and supportive.

FAQ

"Is there an age requirement?" Yes. You must be 18 or older to run here. We're not running any 'adult' themed games for the most part, but for the comfort of our members we keep it above that margin.

"Do I need Discord?" Yep.

"Do I need a headset and working mic?" Yep. You must use voice on this. Video is not used. We run using the Discord voice servers.

"Do you allow Homebrew things?" No, no we do not. The DMs might do some customization to monsters and NPCs to keep things interesting, but on the player-side of things, its a no.

"How are Stats rolled up?" Stats are rolled via 4d6 drop the lowest and placed in order from STR to CHA. We give all new players a 'Voucher' which allows them to rearrange their stats if they'd like. It is one time use for one character however.

"I am looking for Roleplay/Combat/Exploration focused games, does this fit that?" Yes and no. Its player driven. If you want to make sessions that are more about roleplaying and such, you can. If you want to drive sessions towards combat, you can. Its all on the Players. Don't complain to the DMs if RP is what you want, for example, but you aren't getting it. That's on the Players.

"Is there an attendance requirement?" Nope. You will be asked every three months to indicate if you want to remain on the server. If you fail to respond to that, you will be removed and can then reapply...but you don't ever have to play a single session if you don't want to.

"How are level differences handled?" Players that are different levels may play in session together, but it is advised to keep things within tiers of around +/- 4 levels. Players make the sessions, so the character composition is up to who signs up.

"Hey, I'm a DM for games, can I DM?" Not at the start, no. We aren't normally looking for new DMs, but every few months as our player base grows or things change we might recruit. We appreciate people who help make DM lives easier by helping new players and such...but the best way to live is to be a great player first and after a few months you could note your interest in DMing.

"I've joined your Game and now I have a suggestion for how you can do-" Let me stop you there. Don't do this. Don't PM me or any of the other DMs with this stuff. Its a speedy way to annoy folks. Every few months we provide feedback polls with sections to make suggestions. We might even ask for suggestions from time to time. Unsolicited is a fast way to rub the wrong way.

"How do you feel about Rules Lawyers?" They are kicked almost mercilessly. We've had a couple players slip during a session, but if you grind a session down to a halt to argue with the DMs about rules, you will be kicked from the session and most likely the server. THE DMS ARE THE ULTIMATE AUTHORITIES DURING THE GAMES THEY RUN. This includes over the books and dice and whatever. I have selected them because I know they are fair and balanced about things.

"I'm an Asshole. Is that a problem?" Yep. Please don't apply. That goes for any bigots. Racist, Homophobic, Transphobic, or any other hate-filled folks can just click away now.

"Is it okay if I creep on the other members? I mean, it should be taken as flattery, right?" No. Not in the least. Harassment and Sexual Harassment are met with summary bans and possible reporting to relevant authorities and organizations (Such as Roll20 and the r20 community as a warning). Don't be that, we're here to play games.

"I used to run a Westmarches game, this is how you should do-" Stop. No. See a few points above.

"How deadly is this game?" Very, especially to level 1 PCs. If you play smart and careful, you'll do well.

"I want this custom background...." No, stop. Check the rules and the setting. If you are looking at background or backstories, you need to clear anything beyond the standard with a DM.
