Long-time tabletop roleplayer, new to online play with virtual tabletop.
ROLEPLAY VS ROLLPLAY?
Roleplay first and rollplay second (though not entirely absent). In my mind, the mechanics are there to serve the flavour and story, so I will try to create a character-concept, and then try to make it viable under the rules. That means the number-crunching does matter, because it doesn't serve roleplaying if a character cannot do their intended job, but ultimately it is means to an end. If I can, I'll try to make an ability combination or a build flavourful and distinctive in play, rather than just the most effective possible.
That said, I do prefer games with higher ability scores so that I can afford the INT/CHA to participate in intellectual or social challenges as well as combat, rather than having to choose one or the other.
TYPICAL CHARACTERS?
Pro-active ones. Any class, as long as I can think of a personality to go with it. They tend to set their own goals and actively pursue them, and usually gain their abilities through hard work rather than talent. I like characters who think before acting as well.
No chaotic neutral (chaotic stupid) types for me. I do have a few evil-character ideas I want to play (thanks to finding out about Way of the Wicked), but they'd all try to work well within groups.
PLAYSTYLE:
Combat As War = Where fights are won by preparation, sabotage, and doing the legwork long before anybody rolls initiative. A fight that is effortlessly steamrolled in the first few rounds means that our pre-combat preparation paid off. If each encounter forces us into the position for a "fair fight" I will quickly lose interest.
NPC interactions = I take an interest in NPCs and PCs. I like making allies, building relationships, and otherwise cultivating long-term ties during play. I am the player who will actively try to network, or start our own intrigues.
