I started playing D&D around 1987 with the Holmes version of the basic set (1978). I've followed the game through every edition, and some of its post-OGL offspring like Pathfinder and various OSR retroclones. My favorite version is the BECMI Rules Cyclopedia (and/or its retroclone Dark Dungeons, by "Blacky the Blackball"), and I love Ryan Dancey's proposed E6 ruleset.
I am NOT interested in high-powered fantasy with huge amounts of vulgar magic (as they called it in Mage: the Ascension) getting slung around. I prefer Conan/Lankhmar-style Sword & Sorcery. Characters, motivations, good planning and better improvisation are always preferable to big bonuses and nuclear magic doohickeys.
