GenerationX player (he/him, well over 40, UK based) who is admittedly prone to being more childishly enthusiastic than cool and slick - but, more importantly...

I am a player who prefers games of teamwork and concerted efforts to overcome huge obstacles too daunting for soloists...

Played plenty of games in my youth with backstabbing, infighting, profiteering and selfish play being explored and, OK, it was fun for a summer, but it then rapidly got very boring and caused some players to get up and leave the circle.

Much much more can be achieved with a solid base of trust - less conniving solo play, less game-time lost, more achieved, more shared progress, better impact on the world, a better chance of attaining a reputation of dependability and thus a better impact on NPCs... not to mention better feeling among ALL the players. The best feeling actually, a bond of comradery.

I value trust very highly and thus, I am inclined to gravitate to good aligned parties.

Remember, troupes of mixed alignment do not and technically can not pull together all the time -

Forgive me for adding that I often feel some DMs may not have fully considered the collective game hours wasted with such trivial vanities and roleplay conflicts of the individuals who are opposed in alignment.
So be aware, that whilst totally valid, and absolutely favoured by some, a mix big or small (allowing just one maverick evil player into a good aligned party) is a direct invitation for tension and lack of cohesion during game-time, often at important plot points too.

In the resulting compromise, will the best storyline win out? or just the most stubborn extroverted player(s) ??? from experience, I am willing to place a bet on the latter.

Note too of course, that good characters care about stuff, family, friends, countrymen, complete strangers of alien race or culture even! They are invested in the world and will act to defend the weak - this is far more compelling than cool neutrality or selfish evil who might not be inclined to take risks without visible opportunity for profit.

Good players push the story along much more than "edgy" folk of low morality or cold disconnect, and if all players jump in to the fray to help the innocent, then nobody is left feeling vulnerable, they have each other's backs.

I feel trust is the way forward, and everyone playing good characters is a simple shortcut to achieving it. That said, let me assure you, I am quite capable of playing a wide range of characters in varying scenarios, especially in one-shots where ongoing trust is not as key - I merely wanted to point out my reasons here for a very definite alignment preference for extended campaign play.
