On the morning of November 12, Professor Shin-Wook Kang, honorary professor at Dankook University and candidate for the upcoming Korean Sports Council presidency, staged a solo protest outside the Korean Sports Council headquarters in Songpa, Seoul. His aim was to press the Sports Fairness Committee for an impartial review of incumbent President Gi-Hyung Lee’s eligibility for a third term.

Holding signs, Professor Kang emphasized his commitment to a fair process. “This demonstration reflects my wish for a decision that respects the eyes of the public and athletes alike,” he stated. “Both are watching, and they hope for a fair outcome that fosters a sports environment where athletes and coaches can realize their dreams.”

President Lee, who recently submitted his candidacy materials to the Sports Fairness Committee, aims to seek a third term. To compete in the election, Lee must pass the committee’s eligibility screening, scheduled to take place later today at the Olympic Hall.

Professor Kang urged President Lee to withdraw, citing the importance of preserving the Korean Sports Council’s reputation among the public and sports community. “I urge him to make a principled decision that goes beyond the committee’s review, one that removes doubts and earns the love of our sports community,” Kang said. “If he remains determined to run, I am ready to compete and prevail through a fair contest.”

The 42nd Korean Sports Council presidential election is set for January 14, 2025. Alongside Professor Kang, candidates include former Table Tennis Association President Seung-Min Yoo, Seoul Sports Council President Tae-Sun Kang, former Gangwon Sports Council Secretary General Yong-Joo Kim, and former Wushu Association President Chang-Bum Park.
