As a player, I prefer:
  • complex, flawed characters: Incompatible priorities and being pulled in opposite directions are the beating heart of drama. I'm not interested in what is most efficient or 'best'.
  • fiction-first play: "I wade through the crowded hall toward my target, then 'accidentally' bump into my mark. Fingers slip under his jacket to pull at his wallet." vs "Can I try to pickpocket this guy?" I much prefer the first example.
  • characters pursuing their own goals: I'm happy complicating my character's life. I come to every session with a couple To Do items for my character that can drive the story forward.
  • social dynamics: Familial relationships, histories with other PCs/NPCs, different worldviews, etc. I enjoy these as they present opportunities to present a different side of characters (mine and others') and grow them.
  • to be a respectful and unselfish player: I'm that guy at the table that will start post-session discussions to check in on comfort, enjoyment, tone, and direction.
As a GM, I try to:
  • focus on what matters to the characters: Session 0 isn't just for creating characters, it's for populating the world with things that matter to the PCs. The guts of the game are built on PCs finding and pursuing what they want and what they'll sacrifice for.
  • be a fan of the PCs: This might be the most important thing for a satisfying game for everyone.
  • encourage players to have narrative authority: "So you're a street rat? I know the mayor claims to have cleaned up this town but tell me, who really runs these streets?" This lets players get involved in world-building, which is great to generate buy-in, and takes pressure off the GM from doing it all on their own, which is also great.
  • evoke emotion: This hobby can offer so much more than just power-fantasies and laughs. Tension, personal horror, bittersweet tears - these are all achievable and mixing them in creates a much more compelling narrative.
