Learned to play Basic D&D in middle school—we played using the Holmes Basic, with a short stop at using Cook/Marsh Expert. By high school moved on to AD&D 1st ed. (still bringing over some Holmes rules). Was a player and DM in both during those seemingly endless summers. Then college happened, quickly followed by real-life adventures and D&D seemed like only a memory.
Many years later, a friend organized a 3e game. It was great, my wife joined in too. We then moved to 3.5 (having to buy a new set of books that quickly did not sit well).
I prefer Original D&D and Holmes edition, but also play 5e.
