I've been transfixed by D&D since the 3rd grade sitting next to a bright kid on a long bus ride in 1982. For several years after, I spent every cent of my allowance on all the classic TSR canon. Had an overflowing shrine of boxed sets, hardcovers, modules, "choose your own adventures", etc. Sadly I rarely actually played with anyone since I grew up in a fairly rural area. So, I spent a lot of time on the classic video games (Ultima Exodus, Pool of Radiance/Darkness, Gemstone Warrior, Champions of Krynn, etc.). Then in my mid 20's onto Neverwinter Nights, Everquest, and what feels like every MMORPG since then. In my 30's I read all of R. A. Salvatore's stuff, and resumed my shrine building of D&D starting with 3.5 (personal favorite). Heard mention of Pathfinder on an episode of Community, and started following that too.

I've totally lost faith that the video game industry understands (or cares) what I want in a fantasy RPG. Year after year it's a slightly prettier cookie-cutter, pay-to-win, gear grind, with a smattering of laughable AI. DDO probably came closest, but the staff and players were uncannily toxic.

A recent discovery of "Critical Role", awoke my inner geek and desire to see just how close Roll20 comes to those long bus rides in the 3rd grade...
