I began like so many others, making up stories (and rules) and throwing dice as an excuse to gather my friends together for a couple of nights a week. I've always enjoyed running the game more than playing it, being the "mastermind" of a dungeon or castle or what have you and harrying the PCs at every turn. However, as a DM, you have to learn to love to lose, and love to let the players be the heroes and decimate your forces... most of the time.
