I started my RPG career with Runequest in the early 80s, but by 1983 I was mainly playing AD&D. My first experience as a player was heading up the rickety steps into the haunted house in the Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh (U1). Not long after that, I tried my hand at DMing, running the Against the Cult of the Reptile God (N1) for my local group.
Over the years I tried many different RPGs (Traveller, MERP, Aftermath, Paranoia, Call of Cthulu, etc), but I always kept coming back to AD&D (first and second editions) and its amazing worlds (Greyhawk, Forgotten Realms, Krynn).
Eventually real life took me away from RPGs, and apart from a short foray into D&D 3rd edition, I was away from RPGs for about 25 years. Then by pure chance I saw an article about D&D 5e. I knew I had to try it. I've now been running 5e as a DM for about four years.
I'm amazed at where the hobby is today. I can honestly say I had not expected this renaissance for the genre in general and for D&D in particular. I'm sure Mr. Gygax and Mr. Arneson would have been blown away. Now, where are my dice?
