I have played and GM'd in a variety of systems for more than 20 years focusing in a few I find most enjoyable - D&D (1E, 2E, 5E), WoD (Mage, Vampire mostly) and Shadowrun. After #adulting for long enough I've made time to come back to my hobby, currently as a player and building back to the point where I can GM again.
I love creating interesting and engaging characters and designing ways they fit both into their world as well as with the group. As such, understanding how the world and setting works is very important to me so I'm likely to be first in line with questions about pantheons, organizations, geography, flora/fauna, and anything else that is unique to your setting. Devising plausible and engaging ways to connect my characters to their world and party is very fulfilling and a first step toward truly living in my character's skin.
I write reasonably full backstories (~1500 words), family histories, develop character motivations and generally hew toward the 'Storyteller' and 'Method Actor' archetypes when playing. Good narrative rules all IMO and I am much more likely to act in support of a good story element rather than spend time being a rules lawyer.
My goal as a player is to engage in a good story with a band of characters who feel like they belong together. That can be a deceptively simple goal, but when it happens the experience is sublime. I prefer longer term engagements rather than one-shots, as in my experience it may take several weeks or more for everyone to really start clicking. I can balance between combat and RP but tend naturally toward a RP-heavy style, relishing in sessions where nary a blade is lifted.
