I grew up through high school playing Call of Cthulhu and AD&D 2E (Ravenloft mostly). Since those early days (almost 2 decades ago now), I have played a variety different systems to numerous to list. I have found that the unfolding story is more enjoyable to me than the mechanics of gathering loot and power levels. I very much prefer to have my character attached to the game world (through backstory crafting or NPC ties) than just existing as an avatar within it. Lighter, less crunchy systems are my current preference. I am not unwilling to delve into mechanics heavy systems though if the story and role-play pay off counters the mathematical and memorization work...
