Currently 45 and living in Michigan. I am a student that has gone back to college to seek better life options and employment. I have been playing RPGs since I was 15. That makes 30 years in the hobby. About 20 of them have been as a GM. Over the years I have run about 7 or 8 systems and have only recently picked up D&D 5E. Pathfinder and 3/3.5 have been my longest running systems. Though I have Strayed into some less traveled territory such as Alterity, Decipher Star Trek, MechWarrior, Iron Claw, and some even more obscure game. In the end D&D is my current favorite to run. I love to make up home brew races, classes, spells and items. Though it will not be necessary to gain familiarity with them to play with me. They are just options.
I favor heroes that fight the villains and save the day campaigns, with a good mix of combat and RP. I don't heavily favor one over the other. And remember actions will have consequences.
I do follow rule Zero which is the GM makes calls and that supersedes what is in the book. But I typically do this for one of four reasons.
Rule of Cool: Its neat, makes sense or would be really fun to let happen.
Oh come on: Regardless of the rules that makes no sense, breaks immersion, breaks the game, etc...
Don't know and Come back to it latter: We don't want to derail story or action and this will work for now.
Don't like the rule: This is more often a permissive thing that a restrictive thing.
A note, sometime I include the Dreaded "DMPC" This is more for small groups that need to round out a role not covered so players can play what they want to, not what they feel they need to. If this Party NPC as I call them, is in a group, they are put under the control one of my players. I only speak for them or occasionally over ride action for RP purpose. Nobody likes it when the "DMCP" wins they day, the story is predominantly about the PCs. But if a player makes the choices in combat, declares the actions and rolls the dice, its feels like a win for them and the party. As said these character are typically for smaller groups that have a need for a role or extra help. Or you picked them up through RP. You never have to take them with you.
I do like interesting character, But not memes. Edge Lords will be treated with all the seriousness that they deserve. This dose not mean that edgy character are bad. Just remember Team players for a Team game. And the AIB, "Alone is Bad, or the more severe AID "Alone is Dead"
Over all I like the game to be serious, but not Stiff. Have fun, and be funny if you want. Just make sense with it.
