I have known DnD since I was around 16 and played 3.5 a lot in my teens. I started DMing when I was about 19, trying out strong "Rule strict methods" and more "Soft, improvisation methods". I did roll with homebrew for a while, writing a whole campaign for a couple of years.
I found out that, for as much freedom homebrew allows, it leaves too many gaps in how concrete the game is, creating situations of precedence that risk breaking down the game into a mess of unruliness.

I have come back to DM in 5e about 2 years ago, trying to follow the official rules as much as possible while also leaving freedom from too many constraints. On paper, it might sound odd, but my friends I DM'd for are plenty happy with it.
I am currently DMing for 2 groups of friends (Saturday and Monday) and being a player (after more than 10 years of DMing only) on another campaign on Wednesdays.
