I've been gaming since the late 80s, as both DM and player, with gaps here and there after moves and such. Early experience was in AD&D and Rollmaster/MERPs, with a little Marvel Superheroes. Transitioned from 1st to 2nd to 3.5 to Pathfinder. Played 3rd Ed Shadowrun for several years and miss the hell out of it. During what I consider my golden age of gaming my group played various other systems as well (Vampire the Masquerade, EverQuest RPG, L5R, 7th Sea, some other stuff as well) I've played some Pathfinder Society, but one-offs don't really do it for me. More recently I've been playing D&D 5th (how I came to Roll20, in person game migrated over with COVID). It's been a while since my last game ended, so I'm a bit rusty but itching to get playing again.
I tend to take a fair amount of time developing my characters' backgrounds, as it helps me to find the motivation behind why I do what I do. I tend to avoid min/max characters, preferring instead to have characters that are interesting to me. A few quirks or flaws, something out of the ordinary (a troll street doc or a kender monk for example) make the character so much more enjoyable to play. All things being equal, I tend to drift towards stealth/recon type characters. I'm comfortable filling any role in a party though, and when possible prefer to wait to see what everyone else is playing so I can fill a gap. I understand the spirit of "Play whatever you want", but having three mages/fighter/rogues/whatever just results in the most assertive player dominating the spotlight and everyone else feeling useless. It's much more enjoyable when everyone has a specialty that helps the group.
At the table, in character I'll be as passive or assertive as my character's background demands. I'm comfortable with any agreed upon level of RP, from 100% in character (although I'm not very good with voices) to third person narrative. I do not have any triggers, but recognize some players do, and respect them. My only real caution flag is I don't do well with know-it-alls who tell me how to play my character. Answer questions I have, yes please, but too much unsolicited "You're wrong, do this instead" will end badly.
I'm comfortable with any and all at the table. In the real world I don't care what plumbing you have, how you identify, what you prefer to doink, where you're from, where you are now, what you look like, or what your real world political or religious outlooks are. At the table I care even less. After all, we're here to play a big game of make believe :) That being said, experience has shown me that diversity at the table makes for more enjoyable games so even though I say I don't care, I secretly welcome a wider range of players!
I'm in US Central timezone, and would like to find a casual weekday afternoon/evening (my time) game. I'm all for bringing the next generation of gamers to the table, but right now I'm looking for an 18+ game. Right now I'm open to anything but 5e. If I don't know the system I'll learn it fast. I'm open to any size group, although smaller is better, and any format.
My preference is for an ongoing campaign (after the initial feeling out of each other of course) as opposed to one offs. I tried Pathfinder Society for a little while several years back, but there wasn't the connection to my character and no actual Role Playing involved. It felt like a WoW random dungeon group. I prefer Rules As Written, however am fine with a little tweaking for a campaign's flavor. I'm comfortable with any experience level, I can relate right now to both veterans (I've played off and on for a long time) and noobs (I'm rusty right now so don't remember what I don't remember). I'm a firm believer in no real world politics or religion at the table. We're here to escape for a few hours after all. I encourage all demographics at the table as well. Our different real world experiences bring different perspectives to the game after all!
