A Tyranny of Dragons, an epic adventure in two volumes, was
the very first official campaign released for 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons.
It is a classic campaign featuring an epic struggle against the most iconic
enemies the D&D universe has to offer. Right at level 1, player characters
are confronted with the menace of the rising Cult of the Dragon, and the
devastation it brings across the Sword Coast.
This is an action-packed adventure, with a fairly fast pace
of unfolding events - if the players delay, the Cult of the Dragon will not! I
hope we will be able to get through a lot of story in each session. Players
will level quickly at the start, slowing down a bit after level 5. I expect
this campaign to reach into the lower ranks of the epic tier, by the time the
heroes are ready to have their confrontation with (spoilers) the Dragon Queen
herself. Later in the campaign, as the party builds their resources, they have
will have more strategic choices to make.
In terms of content warnings: there is a fairly typical to
high amount of violence for a D&D campaign, including against humanoid
cultists, the possibility of interrogation scenarios (which will be handled
without graphic descriptions of violence), possibly themes of religious
conflict, possibly violence against animals in some cases. We will discuss
limits and triggers during session zero, and everyone should feel empowered to
express their opinion if they feel the game has moved too far in a direction that
they are not happy with.
This is a long-term campaign, with a lot of opportunity for
individual character development. It best suits characters of high idealism and
noble intentions, and it is D&D at its purest form: epic heroes doing epic
things for a higher cause. As a DM, dragons have always been some of my
favourite characters to play, as well as monsters to run in combat, and this
campaign is full of them.
