ArcMageZaln, you should try the Looking for Group search: <a href="https://app.roll20.net/lfg/search" rel="nofollow">https://app.roll20.net/lfg/search</a> You can specify your availability and contact the GM for matching games with your constraints and see if they'll work with you on it. Most GMs are happy to have new players regardless of circumstance.
Good morning to everyone, me and my group are thinking about a migration from FantasyGrounds 2 to roll20. We use TeamSpeech to talk each other and FG2 as tabletop software. I have few question: - in FG2 there is the sheet, when i make a level up (or down) the software change values in my attack(s) automatically so basically i have only to double click on the "attack" icon and the software will make all the calculate. Is the same here? (Is there any video with examples of combat?) - in FG2 we have all the monster directly inside the software, so when my GM want to put a monster in the map he only drag the monster name into the map and the software compile a sheet with the monster specification. Is the same there or i have to rewrite all the bestiary? Thank you so much Francesco

Welcome Francesco! To your first question, it depends on the game system. We have community created character sheets for many systems at this point, but if you're playing a lesser known game, there might not be a character sheet created for it yet. It does depend on the sheet designer, but a lot of the sheets are automated and will change dynamically if you alter stats. Roll20 has no built-in bestiary or rulesets. It's system agnostic, so it'll allow you run pretty much whatever you want and use whatever house rules you and your group would like to use.
I am a new GM on roll20. I've already set up two maps for my players to use but,I can't seem to move my players to the new dungeon map. How can I resolve this issue?
So I'm new to D&D and to roll20 I'm really confused on how to start and what to do so I'm asking for some tips and assistance on how to start up. I really want to get into this but its all over whelming any help is appreciated. Thanks

Yukito, If you open the pages dialog at the top of the window to show all your maps, there is a red ribbon laid across the map the players are currently on. You just need to drag that ribbon to a new map and the players will be taken there. TheInfamousNerd: I'd recommend the Roll20 Crash Course video series. That should rocket you straight up to InfamousRoll20Nerd. =D
Oh crap. Thanks Aaron, I just wanted to crash my current campaign into roll20 because, we can't always meet up at my place and everyone has laptops so, it'd be much easier this way. lol

TheInfamousNerd, first step as a newcomer to tabletop RPGs is familiarizing yourself with what games are available. Dungeons and Dragons is one of the most popular game franchises, but it is not the only RPG on the market now. D&D also has several different editions where the rules are different between each edition. If you want to play D&D specifically, figure out whether you want to play with the 4th Edition ruleset, or 3.5 or the brand new 5th edition, etc. etc. These days, you can find any game or ruleset for any genre or fandom franchise which vary from light rules to very comprehensive rules that can cover several expansion books. Whatever game you do end up going with, pick up a copy of the player's handbook or core rulebook and read through it to familiarize yourself with that game's rules. Once you got a grasp of the rules, go to our LFG (Looking For Group) tool and search for games that are looking for players running the rule system you want to play. The GM of the games you send applications to will tell you how they want you to create your character and will help you get situated. Lots of games run in LFG are newbie friendly.
Thanks Kristin it makes a bit easier for me to set up I will do that

Yukito: I actually run all my in person games on Roll20. It started out as just easier because I could move monsters and their macros over from other campaigns, but it's turned out to be super useful because when one guy needs to be at home instead of at the designated gaming area, we just pipe him in via google hangouts and we're back in business. :)
Hello. I have been looking to get some VTT software for in person games run on my multitouch table, specifically VTT software that can manage combat, such as turn tracking and tracking buffs/conditions, as well as manage mapping, including FoW and dynamic lighting. Can Roll20 do these things? The demo looks impressive, but I didn't really see a lot combat management beyond initiative and hit point tracking. Also, will Roll20 work with a local touch screen (for the players) connected to an Ultrabook (for me), or is it specifically intended for everyone to be using their own device to interface with the application? Thanks in advance for helping me out!

Wow! That sounds like a cool setup. Roll20 is system agnostic, so there isn't anything built in for automaton. That said, with a Mentor subscription you get access to the API, and there are a wealth of great scripts for doing most anything you would want. I can't really speak to the touch aspect of your player station (but I expect it would work fine and you could test it), but you can definitely set things up so that all player actions can be taken from a single account (or all player accounts).
Just about to start a campaign with my usual suspects, and would like to enhance their experience with animated explosions, and other spell effects if they exist. Any tips on where I can find them? Another player has demonstrated their effect, but it has slipped his memory where he found them. By the way, roll20 an excellent idea for a wandering traveller like myself, that can't be in the UK to play firsthand, as it were.

Hi Nicholas. The flame effects are on the toolbar between the drawing tools and the zoom: 1. Click the effects tool 2. Choose the effect you want (all fire currently, but there's talk about adding more) 3. Click the map to display the effect. If you don't have them there, they might be a Mentor subscriber benefit. If that's the case, you can subscribe here , and then REALLY take things to the next level with free tokens, more storage, other things and the API (which is my favorite feature!!!). Hope that helps!
You can also use the flame effect(s) by typing !FX Fireball. I think there's only one type of effect; everything you type after the !FX seems to provide the same effect. I'm no longer sure how you target it, I think it goes off the selected token but I'm not sure. -Phnord

Tigra, most games in LFG, unless they're board games, tend to be set in the future and not match making for gameplay in the present. That's typically to give the GM enough time to figure out who's a right fit for their campaign and for the players to put together their character sheets. Each GM is going to have different prerequisites in how this is done. Jacob, what sort of trouble are you having with LFG?
I feel like a knucklehead. How do I add new colors and textures to my palette?

Joshua, I'm not sure what you mean. Are you talking about this: Or are you talking about drawing a map like you would in Map Tool or similar?
I was talking about that, so that I could draw a map, like in maptools.

Roll20's drawing tools don't behave like MapTool's. There are no texture brushes and when you're creating the backdrop, nothing ever flattens out on Roll20. Each illustration stroke will be its own object. MapTool uses raster graphics (Think Photoshop) while Roll20 uses vector graphics (Think Illustrator). If you plan to hand draw your map in Roll20, you might end up with many drawing objects sitting on your tabletop before you start placing tokens down. It's recommended that you draw a battle map in another piece of software like GIMP or in Maptools itself and bringing the finished image back into Roll20.
Thank you very much!
I have been in game or about 2 months and last night i had a huge error with the roll20 system. I kept getting kicked because the server kept interrupting, and as i opened the reason it said that real time shard 0 and 9 were getting pings that were interrupting the flow. How do i stop that from happening?

Is your friend the GM? If so they should guide you through the character creation process. GMs typically want their players to draft their characters in a very particular way.
Nick S, welcome to Roll20. Roll20 is system-agnostic, which means that it doesn't work for any one system, but is designed to make it easier to use any and all systems. As such, there is no one-right-way-to-make-a-character. Each individual campaign is different, depending on what the GM calls for. In addition, a request to make a character falls outside the normal range of what this particular forum is for. It is considered off-topic, oddly enough; they prefer you use other RPG-related messageboards for such discussions. The Roll20 forums are for discussion of the Roll20 system itself. There are lots and lots of resources out there. Ask your GM for assistance. And have fun! -Phnord

I have another nooberiffic question for you wonderful, friendly folks. :) What are the limitations of macros? I'm not a coder - I can (and will) learn, but it's from the ground up. Am I able to use macros to change hit point numbers, for instance, or is that something that I'd need to do in the API? Where is the line between the two?

Hi Mel. Macros are really just mathematical formulas with a few special rules about evaluation. They don't have any actual logic or storage. You can write macros the combine dice rolls, add attributes and constants to them, automatically reroll some values, etc. You cannot set any values with them (outside the Initiative tracker and something else I can't remember). Basically, Macros can't change anything, they can only report the answer to a math problem. The API is a full programing language (Javascript). With it, you can interact with large portions of Roll20. Change the values on characters, determine where tokens are, create new tokens, etc. Many many possibilities. Hope that helps!

Hi Aaron! That is exactly what I wanted to know. Thank you so much!
How do I create a character?

Alex P., first off, you must be a GM on the campaign. If you aren't, you're GM will need to create the initial character instance and give you permissions on it. You find characters in the Journal section [1] . If you are a GM on the campaign, you can click the +Add button [2] to create an instance of a character. Then you just need to fill in the name, etc and click Save Changes. Once you've saved the character, there are a few tabs you can switch between to add various information. Check out the Roll20 Crash Course video on Characters: <a href="https://wiki.roll20.net/Roll20_Crash_Course#Managi" rel="nofollow">https://wiki.roll20.net/Roll20_Crash_Course#Managi</a>... Hope that helps!

Hey Logan, probably your best bet is to search in the Looking for Group Tool or post/read in the Looking For Group Forum .
oh so no way to find just a bunch of people looking for one shots? you actually have to find someone posting a one shot then huh? i think it would be cool to have a forum area where you could say hey im free tonight anyone interested in one shot and then make something right there.

You can post precisely that in the looking for group forum. People will be glad to try and help you with specific problems in this forum, but that's where people go to find games and players. Some GMs have recurring games where if there are enough people logged in, they have a game right then. Phnord's Color Animal Inn is that way: <a href="https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/1070462/the-color-animal-inn-newbie-friendly-chatroom-slash-pathfinder-game-once-again-opens-its-doors-august-8-2014-5pm-cst/#post-1070462" rel="nofollow">https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/1070462/the-color-animal-inn-newbie-friendly-chatroom-slash-pathfinder-game-once-again-opens-its-doors-august-8-2014-5pm-cst/#post-1070462</a>

Ok mostly new and want to be ready to GM RMU (Rolemaster Unified), In the Shadow World (Kulthea). Not quite sure where to begin so I started with a map. I have been Roleplaying forever (Near enough) and have enough modules to Choke a Horse (or a herd of them), but going through the maps some have a scale ruler and some don't. Some have a Map Grid and some don't. Aligning to the grid is getting Problematic. Going through the Tutorials I am finding references to the Scaling Tool (Still have no Idea what it is or where it is) and now cannot turn off Snap to Grid. ...um, HELP! I should also mention that I am the GOD of using the wrong keywords to find what I am looking for.

Unfortunately that is how I got here...when going through the Motions I could not Un-allign (&lt;-Is there a correct spelling for that word?) it I cannot figure out how to do it. I did find my workaround though. ROLL 20 SUPPORTS HEX BASED MOVEMENT!!!!!!!!!! &lt;Happydance&gt; and I found how to scale the Map. Now I just need to figure out how to do everything else... I know a lot of people play Dark Heresy. There is a specific section of the wiki for 40k Black Crusade . If you look through the Looking for Group Tool, you can find a few listings under 40k and Dark Heresy . I'd suggest reading some of the posts in the Looking for Group Forum, and maybe posting there. As for what is popular in general, Pathfinder, DnD 4th edition, Savage Worlds, etc. Pretty much any of the games in the pre-populated list in looking for group have a certain level of popularity. There are other games played here that aren't on that list (I'm playing in a Dresden Files RPG game, for example). You should be able to find a nice home here for you gaming! =D
