Hello Ezi and welcome to our little corner of the internet and the hobby that we all enjoy. There are a few things I would recommend for you to start off with. The first thing is to read the first post and follow the links in it. Very good information is contained there. The next thing after you watched the videos (the links in the first post) is to find you a group. There are a few locations you can do that and they are: In the blue banner above you will see "looking for group". That will take you to our search engine but be sure to checkmark welcomes new players. That will make sure your results are for new players and not experienced players. Once you have your results, you will need to apply to join the group (think of it as an application). Another spot to look is in the looking for group forum and you will still need to post your interest in the game that catches your attention. There are a few other places but those should do you for now. Getting into a game takes time and patiences so good luck.
Thanks. Really needed that.
Hey there! I'm fairly new here and I can hardly wait to become part of the community. I would like to start by saying that I loved the introduction videos you guys provided at the opening post, they were concise but very informative! The entire idea behind this site is pretty genius. Great job to everyone involved in this! -------- There is one little thing I need help with, though... I've noticed the "Looking for group" feature has no filter on whether or not you're willing to voice chat. Is there a simple way for me to quickly separate the "microphone games" from the "text games"? My English pronunciation is awful, really... there's absolutely no way I would be able to Roleplay via audio. I can read/write just fine, that's why I'm looking forward to enter a "text chat only" game. I have noticed there is a reasonable amount of Open Games requiring Google Hangout... This is making me wonder how many people over here sees "voice chat" as the standard means of communication....Maybe even to the point that they wouldn't feel the need to explicitly point that out in the description. How common is voice chat over here? I have never played table RPG online in my entire life.... So I'm really diving into this almost blind. Thanks in advance

Hello Kelloggs, you can use the keyword feature and put in "text" that will search for those games that are tagged text. Many games here are voice but there is a reason number that are text only or a blend of text. Another feature of the roll20 search is you can toggle the welcomes new players and that will limit your results also.
Ah! Good idea! Thanks for the tips, Pat. I really appreciate the help
Hello from the Carolinas! It has been over 10 years since I've played D&D, now I'm ready to get back in. I was excited to stumble across Roll20! But help! What version should I play? Who could I enlist to help me with a Character Sheet? Any help or advice would be incredibly appreciated. Thank you! -B

Hello Delphira, Depending on what you want to learn is what edition you want. If you never experienced 3.0,3.5, pathfinder, 4e, or the latest edition 5e but want to then there is lots of games around. You can look in the forums (looking for group) or use the search engine (blue banner above and click on looking for group). There are the older styles of D&D (BECMI, 1e, and 2e) but they are slightly more scarce. The first step is to find a game that interests and get invited into the group then the gm will help you with everything else. Remember to sale your experience and such for a gm can get hundreds of requests for one spot and you have to get him to choose you (I exaggerate somewhat because it is more like 10 to 1 spot) so put on your best suit and sale yourself.
Delphira, I strongly recommend PCgen to all my players. It takes you step by step through character creation for many systems and has a more complete setup for the information of all those systems than any other character builder by far. I mostly play Pathfinder, and the only thing it's missing from the Pathfinder rules are the hybrid classes which were released late August.
cannot get dice roller to work either from auto roller or keyboard input keep getting this message "There was an error fetching your roll. Please try again."

That's very weird, I've never seen that message. I speculate that there is something wrong with your campaign. If you want to PM me a join link, I can jump in and see if I get the same messages (might be this afternoon before I get a chance). You might also consider making another campaign to see if something got corrupted during creation.
Hello everyone. My name is Matthew and I am a new explorer in the realm of Roll20. I have been away from tabletop for many a year and want to stay getting back in to it with 5E. Would love to meet a like-minded group to have some fun with. On a technical note, does anyone know if this platform runs well on the X1 browser?

Hi Matthew! I'd say that step 1 is to watch some of the videos from the first post on this thread. That will get you familiar with what Roll20 does. Next browse in the Looking for Group forum, or search with the Looking For Group tool for a group that seems like what you'd like. Or even post in Looking for Group with what your mind is like. =D I don't know anything about the X1 browser, but from google searching, it seems to allow deep searching on webpages. That should work fine for the most part (though you may need to configure it not to follow links to games) on the text version of the site. When you get in the Virtual Table Top, you will probably want to use Google Chrome (though Firefox is also officially supported). Hope that helps!
Thank you very much for the information. Does anyone know if Roll20 might design and app for the xbox one? Seems like a good fit with the kinect camera...

I imagine it's pretty low on the priority list, but who knows. Roll20 is generally browser based, with some support for tablets. You could try it through the web browser on the XBox (pretty sure it has one...). If you'd like to see that supported, you can put a suggestion in the Suggestions and Ideas forum. (You might have to wait a year to get a vote, or upgrade to subscriber/mentor.)

Hi Sirwinsalot, Sounds like you're Looking For Group . (That's the forum for people trying to get in a game or organize one). You can use the Looking for Group Tool to search for games that you'd like to join. You should be able to find some great groups or players there! Happy Gaming!
Quick question, sorry if it's in the wrong place... I scanned for a bit and could not find the answer, so here I am. I'm playing D&D 3.5, and while filling out my character sheet (for one of the NPCs), I realized that I have no idea how feats are integrated...or even IF they're integrated somehow. Would someone point me in the general direction of the answer? Thanks in advance, y'all ROCK!!! Asmo

Might be better suited for the Character Sheets forum. I just just checked the 3.5 sheet and it looks like there is a text box for Feats. So I assume you would list your feats there and make adjustments to your sheet and/or macros as needed. For example; if you had Dexterous Dodge you would list it in the feats section and then add +2 to your Dex using Misc field. Hope this helps.

Aidan. Welcome to the community and do not worry about not having a mic and cam. There are plenty of games that are text based.

aidan f. said: im new to RPGS and im looking for a easy to get into game i dont have a mic or web cam though You don't have to have a mic or webcam to play games on roll20, although it is very helpful. You can use the built-in chat feature exclusively, however some games/GM's may require you to use voice and/or video. I would recommend at least getting a microphone. Using your voice is probably the most popular method of communication. Some people use Google Hangouts ( Wiki Link ) instead of roll20's built-in features.
New here, but not to roleplaying :) Can this site be used for a Rolemaster campaign as well? I love 2ed D & D, but been playing Rolemasters for last couple years and would love to set one up on here

Roll20 is designed to be system independent, so the only limits are what you can do with the tools provided. So, absolutely. Have fun, read the wiki/help guide, ask questions, and have fun.
The hardest part is actually getting accepted into a game ;-;
where is a good place to post about my kickstarter without getting it taken off or banned. Don't want t break any rules..

Are you meaning to enter the campaign? If so then just go to your campaigns (blue banner above has the my campaign button) and click on the view detail of the campaign (takes you to that campaign's forum) or click launch campaign which will take you into your campaign board itself. If you are wanting to finish up some of your settings like community created character sheets, you go to the detail page and on the left side you will find the campaign settings button towards the middle section. There you can setup some of your global settings such as sheets.

I have only just BEGUN to put things in; nowhere NEAR ready to play when I was forced to shut down my computer for a few minutes. When I returned, the only option I can find is to 'launch' the campaign. Is there no way to 'pick-up' from where I left off to continue populating my campaign? Or am I forced to delete and start from scratch?

khrys, from the landing page (My Campaigns) you'll see your different campaigns listed. To the right are two options, View Details and Launch Campaign. Under View Details you can set up things like the Campaigns character sheet, the next scheduled date, and use that campaign's specific forums. From Launch Campaign you have access to the virtual table top, including setting up new maps, tokens and music. The Roll20 wiki has a lot of great information on how to set up. Try looking at the Getting Started section.

I have now 'launched the campaign' so I can continue to set it up, thank you for that , did not realise I could continue to set up from there. Of course, I cannot continue to work from there, as now, when I launch, I get a yellow header bar that says (ever so politely) "Rats! WebGL hit a snag, Ignore OR Reload page" . I reloaded page. Same issue, over and over. Shut down 'puter and restarted. Still get the yellow header bar. What is it ignoring if I click 'ignore'? Will my game still load and 'hold'? Or will I be wasting my time to move forward until the bar is dealt with? TY again...

What browser are you using? Is there a box that popped up near the top of your browser asking permission to load? If not check out this .
Steve K. said: What browser are you using? Is there a box that popped up near the top of your browser asking permission to load? If not check out this . Google Chrome, and no, it's not asking to load, it's asking to re-load . Or for me to ignore. Clicking the link you provided to see what it will tell me and submitting the information it requests to Bug Reports & Technical Issues . (I do notice misspelling of the word 'refreshing' (spelled refershing), don't know if that could be causing an issue as well...) And, after posting, this notice was conveyed: DataMapper::UnsavedParentError: The source must be saved before creating a resource So, I've no idea if the control+shift+j actually has been entered into the Bug Reports & Technical Issues section. *sigh*

Hey all, I started using Roll20 because it's a great way for beta testing a board game I am designing. I have a specific question regarding items and could not find the answer in the guides I've encountered. Players in my game play a single hero but rather than having character-dependent items and abilities, they draw cards (from an item stack or a spell stack) that they can equip and then use. They have 3 item slots: hand, apparel and trinket. They also have 3 spell slots (spell 1, 2, 3), and a racial ability/spell that cannot be changed. Most items and abilities give dice in 4 colours: red = melee attack, yellow = ranged attack, blue = ranged attack with a bonus (+2) and green = defense. I want players to be able to cast: #attack, which takes all dice from all item slots #spell1, which takes the die from an equipped spell #spell2 #spell3 #racial Every die that is higher than a monster's threshold becomes a hit. I use d4, d6 and d8 depending on hero level (1, 2, 3, resp). My macros work great if I have spells, weapons, heroes and monsters all as characters with the parameters I need as attributes. For instance: Wizard has Level = 1 Wand has Yellow = 2 Monster has Threshold = 3 The Macro "/roll @{Wand|Yellow}d(@{Wizard|Level}*2+2)&gt;@{Goblin Melee|Threshold}" There are three problems. First, it does not make sense that items (and monsters?) are characters. Second, any players (character) can use this attack with the wand, even those that have no wand equipped. Third, this ranged attack is for a wand-wizard combination specifically, whereas I would want it for general equipped weapons and selected characters. How can I smoothen this?
how do you get into the game after you joined the group?

Robert, after you've been sent a Join link. The campaign will appear in your campaigns if you select the Virtual Table Top link at the top left hand of this page.
Hi, I'm new to tabletop games, joined because I'd read so many stories on /r/gametales and wanted to join in the fun. I've read the wiki page linked for beginners, but I still have a question - sorry if it's been asked already, I can't find it. I don't have any rulebooks. Do I need to buy rulebooks before I join a game? Are there any 'F2P' tabletop games or ones where the rules have been made public? I'm not sure that I want to spend a lot of money on tabletop games, and I definitely don't want to buy one rule book and then realize that I like one of the other games more.

Hi Patrick, Having the rulebook is different for each group. My suggestion would be to search LFG with the "welcome new players" option selected. Then browse through the games that interest you. When you find one you'd like to play in, start a forum post inside that LFG listing and explain your situation. The Game Master will let you know if owning the book or knowing the rules is important to that group or not. That said, there are a ton of popular rule sets that are free. Both Pathfinder and DnD 3.5 have their core rules sets available online for free. DnD 5th recently came out with a starter rules set also released for free. Other games like Dungeon World have free rules online. These are all very popular games. It's just a matter of finding the style and the group that's right for you. Let me know if you have any other questions. We're here to help.

Pathfinder has its System Reference Document and D&D 3.5 has a similar setup . I don't think the 3.5 SRD is as complete and useful as the Pathfinder one, but it is enough to get you started for playing that system.
Thanks!
i just joined a game and could not get mumble to work so i got booted from the game within 20 min. it sucks to make a character and then told to go away. I want to find out my problem so i can play another game. I get my internet from my phone and its hot spot. I use a laptop and it seemed to work on roll20 but mumble went crazy the same way on the laptop and then the tablet i tried did same thing. Is it because I have internet from my phone and its a droid operating system and I need to buy and account with roll20 to make it work? or is it just that mumble sucks???

most voice programs require a higher bandwidth then phone hotspots supply (I'm using my phone as a hotspot for my laptop to post this) and you do not need to purchase a subscription to have it work. Mumble is a 3rd party program that is not affiliated with roll20.

Hello people! I've got myself a basic character outline set up for Pathfinder (been using <a href="http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/gettingStarted.html" rel="nofollow">http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/gettingStarted.html</a> ), but I need a GM to act as a mentor OOC and play as a mentor figure IC. Don't want voice/video chat because I've had a LOT of esafety stuff shoved in my head. Haven't played a proper RPG before. Is there anyone/any part of the forums that would be helpful for this?

Hello Leeroy. Your best bet would be either use the looking for group search engine ( up above in the blue banner ) or make a post explaining what you are wanting in the looking for group forum. There is also a text only group that is always open to new players (I'm a member of it as I prefer text chat games). I'll pm you the link to it so this thread doesn't get spammed by other links.
Hi, I would like to test the API script and I'm wondering why it is for Mentor subscription only? I'm pretty sure that if it was free, there would be a lot of programmer interrested to make good scripts and who would share them for free. That would be beneficial for everyone... Please offer it to everyone! Thank you
