PC max HP resetting to level 1 values

June 25 (2 years ago)

All of my PC's have been experiencing an issue where their max HP reverts back to their level 1 state. It seems to happen to random PC's each game and is at least 1 every session often more. We are rolling for HP but are about to revert to averages as we no longer know who is supposed to be at what.

Would love to know what's causing this and maybe a fix?

PS running D&D 5e using the default character sheets.

Are the bar values for the default tokens linked to the sheet's hp? If not, when you drag a new copy from the journal then the original values will be used, but if you copy the current token and paste onto a new map then the current value will be copied. This might explain the "random" part you mentioned.

There is another slim possibility I can think of if you are using an account that has api script access, but it won't be relevant if the game is Plus.

I've seen this happen twice in my D&D5e game. The second time that it happened was when, between game sessions, I noticed that some of the players had not adjusted their character sheets for having had a long rest. Just to speed things up for the next game session I used the "Resting in Style" API to update their sheets for them. Later when I selected one of those tokens I noticed that the hit point total in the token's balloon was a single digit number even though the health bar showed full health (The party were all at higher levels). The character's hit point total had reverted to their total at 1st level.

I fixed the player's character sheet after checking my game backup. The problem does not repeat consistently, but when it does it only does so when I use the "Resting in Style" API as GM on a player's token, never when a player does it on their own token. I don't know if this is what caused it the first time that it happened since I can't remember if I used that API in that occurrence.

All the HPs are linked to the sheet HP and it's not only the tokens that are affected but the actual character sheet also. Meaning all tokens across all maps have that same HP

ok, and no api scripts are used in this game, right? If not, and the default tokens are set up correctly, then I'm at a bit of a loss :/

File a Help Center Request. This way you reach the devs directly as this might be a problem with the charactermancer...

For those folks having a problem with this, are you dropping the tokens on the map before you open the sheet the first time?

One person I spoke to suggested that this may be a Lazy Loading issue, where the stats on the token are defaulting to some earlier version and not pulling the current numbers from the sheet because it has not been opened yet. Not sure if this is the case, but it seems to explain the behavior.

I drop tokens in various states (opened and unopened sheets), but have not run into the problem yet.

Nope, these are character sheets that have been used since beginning of campaign and are used frequently. Also its not just a single token doing it but the entire character sheet and all tokens for that character on all maps.

I too have begun to experience this in two separate campaigns.

HP values are linked to character sheets.

Dropped directly from journal and not copy pasted across pages.

APIs being used:

GroupInitiative

splitArgs

Flip Tokens

Aura/Tint Healthcolors

5th Edition OGL by Roll20

libTokenMarkers

TokenMod

It fixed itself and the only "corrective actions" I took were opening a character sheet to make sure values were correct (they were not on the token), deleting one of the tokens with an old value on an old page, and dropping a new token.

Not sure if this information is helpful, but I think I'm going to start screenshotting the party's hp values after each session just to be safe lol

I have a theory on the why,  haven't had a chance to fully test yet but it seems to happen only to tokens that are dropped when the character sheet is on the spells or bio pages.

I noticed tonight when I dropped all 5 characters into a new map I'd made 2 of the 5 had small hit points. I opened all 5 character sheets and this 2 were both open on the spells page. Switching to core and redropping the tokens fixed the issue.

EDIT - re-reading your first post, I now see that we may be talking about different but possibly related problems. Mine is a blank ac problem.

I was unable to reproduce your results, Ashley. Tried it with pc & npc sheets (5e by roll20) with sheets open on all tab iterations. I did notice something interesting, though probably not helpful for root cause: when I logged into my test game I happened to have two tokens on my map that had blank ACs in bar2. One Giant Boar and one Satyr. The AC on the Satyr sheet itself was also blank, but the boar's sheet ac was still intact. Both tokens' bar2 were still linked to npc_ac. Toggling the boar's bar2 link and saving forced a refresh of the token bar2 display.

This is a sneaky little bugger, for sure!

Definitely sneaky.

I ran into Ashley B's HP-reset problem once, with some of the PCs and not others, in a game with no APIs. I edited the character sheets and redid the default tokens and so far the problem has not recurred.

Hi Ashley, I ran into this a couple weeks ago and for me, it is getting worse. Even when I avoid the 'Lazy Load' mentioned by Gauss, it recurs. There is another thread that you can add to.
