/r vs. /roll

Is there any difference or reason I should use /roll over /r? I've been using /r in macros with no apparent ill effect, but I almost never see that referenced in examples.
They're the same thing. As is [[1d20+X]]

/roll was the original command for the dice roller then it was streamlined into /r but now due to the high demand of inline rolls, the devs created the [[ inline roll command ]] which removes the image of the dice and just allows the total result of the roll to show in the chat. If you hover over the result it shows you the formula and the rolls in a pop up window.
Thanks guys!
