Tokens not being associated with the character

for a while i've been getting an error where I drag a character onto the map and they're not associated with the character at all. As a DM this is annoying but fixable. As a player its annoying and not fixable. Whats going on and is there any way to fix it as a player?

No, there isn't.  If the token image is originally being assigned by the player, all it does is set the image.  It is NOT set up as a token, including being set to represent that character.  Setting up the token (represents, token bar settings, name plate visibility settings, etc.) are all still exclusive to the GM role.
