"Secret Rolls" - having players roll but not see the results themselves

I was thinking it would be cool if I could have my players make ability checks, but not know what they rolled. So, I could have the rogue check for traps, for instance, and they might roll a 1. If they know they rolled a 1, they know not to trust what I say, but if they don't know what they rolled, then I can tell them confidently they didn't find a trap (same as if they'd rolled an 18), and they'll be none the wiser. I was thinking the roll result is tagged with the player who rolled it, and the date/timestamp. That way, I can show them the roll later. They still controlled their own destiny that way. Has this been discussed?

This is the same as: https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/11358097/blind-gm-rolls-and-changing-visibility-of-chat-entrys-after-post We should combine the 2 suggestions.

This suggestion keeps cropping up. I would really love to have this option.

Doable with a pro subscription, at least for skillchecks. I had one that rolled twice for every skill and I'd explain how things went based on the roll, unless it was a nat20 or nat1, then I'd give them the news and ask them what everyone else sees who happens to be looking at them. I do wish there were easier ways to incorporate this into your game, but good roleplayers will make it unnecessary. If you find some, let me know! ;)
I don't know about other systems, but in PF1, a natural 1 doesn't mean an automatic fail, especially with high enough bonuses. When a player rolls to find traps, I always tell them, "You find no traps," whether it's a failure to find a trap or no trap to find. They must decide if they trust their roll or risk setting off a trap.

This is a nice idea that should be implemented. Both these ideas have my vote.

I suggest we add it to this one: https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/4922089/gmrolls-that-are-hidden-even-from-the-player-that-makes-the-roll
Hello there! I'm cross-posting from a similar thread , but wanted to make sure you all had the latest information as I will be closing this thread to return your votes. ----- Thank you for keeping this thread going. Your feedback shaped what we built, and most of what was asked for here is now live: Rolls hidden from the roller: /sr (or /secretroll ) sends a roll to the GM only. The roller sees a confirmation that a roll was sent, but not the result. Rolls nobody knows happened: /ssr (or /supersecretroll ) sends the result to the GM with no output for the roller at all. It also works in Token Reactions, so you can set up hidden trap rolls that pull attributes from the character who triggered them. Template support: As Gauss pointed out, /s and /ss let you wrap any roll template, like /s &{template:default} {{name=Insight}} {{Roll=[[1d20+3]]}} . You can also add &{secret} to inline rolls. Dice Roller: Select Secret as the roll type. You can learn more about everything you can do with these here: Secret and Super-Secret Rolls The remaining request was the ability to use Secret Rolls directly from the 2024 character sheet. That’s now on our public roadmap , where you can follow its progress. With that, we’re closing this thread. Your votes have been returned, so you can put them toward other suggestions.
