Hi Safari Joe! Out of curiosity, were their characters created with the new Roll20 Characters feature, or built in-game? Kicking a player should not delete a character built in-game, but it might do so with a Roll20 Characters character. I'm asking so I can help guide other folks who might run into the same issue.
I had turn on the setting where the players can create character sheet themselves. So when I kicked them all of the ones who had character sheets given to them by me were still in-game. The rest vanished.  I did a rollback a few days prior and now they're back.

Thanks for reporting. I have passed that on, in case it truly is a bug, and not by intention.

Safari Joe,  In the future I suggest avoiding allowing players to use the +Character (in the Journal tab in the game) or the Roll20 Characters feature and importing their character into the game.  It prevents GM control over the character as needed.  If you'd like to retain GM control over characters you can disable both imports and the +Character button via settings in your Campaign Details page.
Good to know, thank you <3

Also, that creation button feature is apparently tied into the Roll20 Characters feature (accessible in the Tools menu at the top of this page). The characters your players created should have been moved to their Roll20 Characters pages, intact, when you booted them from the game. I have tested this with a  Dummy Account  to confirm.
In the past, I had been exporting my characters to the (soon to be replaced)  Character Vault as a backup then deleting the older versions, and have also recommended to myplayers to do the same for their characters in my game.  Now what I'm reading in this thread as well as some of the other things that I've read about the Roll20 characters feature worries me that if I delete what I think is an old version of a character there's a chance that I will lose that character completely. As a GM I make backups of my game after every session, so at least my players have that as a safety (I think!), but it seems that I no longer have a safe way to backup my own characters in the games that I play in other than to print their sheets to a pdf so I can recreate them if needed. I wish there was a way to export a character from a game and have it NOT linked to that game (if there already is a way, I wish it were more obvious because I certainly can't find it.). keithcurtis said: Also, that creation button feature is apparently tied into the Roll20 Characters feature (accessible in the Tools menu at the top of this page). If you duplicate a Roll20 Characters character in your game, that will belong to the game and act normally. It is my understanding that one of the intents of Roll20 Characters is to provide players with more agency and control over their characters, but the whole feature needs a bit more cooking and communication. IMHO. As a Pro User, you could turn off Roll20 Characters access and allow players to create characters with something like The Aaron's AddPlayerCharacter .
