Hello! It would be very helpful to my group if I as the GM could turn on Explorer Mode, but then players whose older computers grind to a halt as a result could individually turn it off for themselves, allowing them to keep playing while also letting others with faster computers still enjoy that extremely nifty feature. :-) This could also be used for voluntary roleplaying of the character not having perfect map recall, while enabling those players who want or even need this feature to enjoy the game to still use it.
Excellent suggestion! I don't use explorer mode except for large-scale maps where players can track long-distance travel, but for those that do this could be a game-saver!

While there isn't THAT feature yet (as asked in the OP), there has recently been some new Settings introduced by Roll20 for individual players to downgrade or cap their Graphics performance in a couple different ways, that can save resources for lesser-powered computers. Have your Players look under the Settings cog at top-right above your game's chat room in the VTT, and test/toggle the 2 different drop-down menus related to FPS and Textures
Gold: Thank you for your suggestion.  I have been keeping on eye on the Roll20 change log and letting my players know about these performance-related settings as they have been added.
Bump for more people to see this and possibly keep it alive. ;-)
