Restricting items during character creation/level up?

I have all of the 2014 edition source books and I am thinking about upgrading to the 2024 source books. I want to keep the older books available for some of the Tashas and Xanathars bits and bobs (ie artificer from Tasha's) which is compatible with the new rule set. Is it possible for me to limit the selections the players have at character creation and level up, by removing 2014 edition spells, removing specific races not available in the campaign, only allowing 2024 class as the selectable choice etc? I don't want to remove the older books from the game though. If this isn't possible, I'll have to give my players a list of instructions when creating their characters which ideally I didn't want to do.
As far i I know there's no way to automatically "line item veto" specific items within a compendium (someone please correct me if I'm wrong!). The last line of your post describes how I have done it. I create both a handouts within the game and posts in a read-only channel on my game's Discord server describing things like this that are specific to my campaign. *Most* of my players are good about reading them :)  Tim L. said: If this isn't possible, I'll have to give my players a list of instructions when creating their characters which ideally I didn't want to do.
ok, that's annoying if it's not possible. I just know when they level up they are so going to pick the 2014 variant of a spell not the 2024 one. Not deliberately of course to choose the better variant, but because players do things we can't always explain!
Replace "players" with "people" and this applies to so many things! :D Tim L. said: ... but because players do things we can't always explain!

Hi Tim L.,  When using the Character Builder content is marked by source. Additionally there is a filter button to select 2014 vs 2024 content.  So regarding spells, I would have them filter the content to 2024 content if you'd like to restrict it. Or tell them to select the 2024 versions of spells since they are all marked appropriately.  Alternately, I wouldn't worry about it too much as most 2014 and 2024 spells are fundamentally the same. There are some spells that are different, but most of those are better if 2024 so gives the player a reason to select them over their 2014 versions. Of course, there are a handful that are better in 2014, personally I allow users to choose which one they want if that is the case since the 2024 rules are "backwards compatible".
