The hours have strung together in a blur, and I hope my time comes soon and quietly. I know I am the last of my brothers standing at this fort for I can hear the shambling of undeath beyond this barricade. I pray they tell stories of our honorable battle even if it wasn’t so. The only solace is being able to write out these thoughts in the relative sanctity of this room. Why did the Gods have to abandon us? The forsaken few who cursed us to this fate surely could have been enough of a sacrifice to prevent this tragedy? For what reason must I hear the maggots crawl through the skulls of people I’ve shared drink with? Should I even offer a prayer to these mighty but deaf ears? I hope you’re satiated on the blood that’s spilt. Punish us for the folly of men we’ve never met! Go on and curse us you vile twisted useless things. Drink your fill on the innocents. The only prayer I’ll offer is to my kin that when the final worthless light of this plane winks out, it’s sputtered in a curse of your names to match my own.
An Unidentified Soldier’s letter at the fall of Rindalle.
Heya, welcome to Irrythia. The letter written above is my attempt to set the tone for the game I will be running, and hopefully the grimdark aspect of it has shown through! Irrtyhia is a fully homebrew world I’ve worked on for a decade on and off. It’s got a lush history and is coming off of an almost 3 year campaign that’s acting as a bit of a prequel to the current game that will be starting up. The campaign setting is dark, and that cannot be stated clearly enough. The Gods have seemingly abandoned the realm after the God of Life’s sudden disappearance. With him went all faculties of healing and resurrection, and for perfect clarification of this almost all healing and resurrection magic in this setting DOES. NOT. WORK. There are no clever work arounds, and the world is fully aware of this fact.
After a major calamity the world is left in a destructive wake after picking itself back up. While civilizations have managed to recover and the world can operate at some level of normalcy, the influx of planar energy from all of the planes being woven together has put the material plane on a clock. Irrythia takes place in a dying world. It is fully understood and inevitable that the land that is habitable is shrinking year by year, and though most kingdoms are attempting to hold it back apathy has worn its way through the populace. Most attempts at survival are simple struggles of maintaining appearances and most have given up on ever fixing the world after failures have piled high and compounded. So what does that mean for our players?
That means I am looking for heroes in a world that doesn’t want you. For characters with depth and purpose and a sense of self strong enough to not only withstand the darkness, but to try and hold a light within it. For a group of characters that can look at the world everyone else has said isn’t worth saving, and still be able to speak the words “I want to try.” even if deep down they feel it’s never going to work.
So with that established who am I and what do I want out of my players if you’re still interested? My name is Gray, I’m 29 years old and I’ve been DMing for over a decade. I take a lot of pride in my storytelling and making way for emotional impact as well as freedom of choice. The games I run are fully open, characters can make whatever decision they want and go wherever they want at any given time (with consequences being an obvious understanding of choice.) So what does that mean for my players?
That means I want you to explore the character you’ve always dreamed of telling. I want your investment as well as your joy and I am open to making anything and everything happen to bring those stories to life that you want to share with both me and the rest of the group. This is a table for the theatrical and the people who have always wanted to tell a character with more just dice rolls or combat, or dialogue that just feels like foot notes to get to the next section. Part of achieving that involves having a lot of trust in the people you share the table with to also be as invested in your character as you are, and I’ve spent a lot of time cultivating a table just for that.
Part of that is feeling comfortable in the space to tell those stories, so joining this table comes with the understanding that everyone at it wants to be your friend, a partner in your storytelling, and not just another D&D table. Currently we’re a group of five seeking a sixth, we’ve all spent countless hours outside of D&D playing games together, getting to know one another. I have a very strong belief in the social aspect of the game and want someone to join who also wants to be part of a friend group that does more than meet once a week.
If you’ve made it this far thank you so much for taking the time to read. It’s a bit longwinded but there’s still so much I’d love to go into detail about so if you’re interested please feel free to fill out the survey below so I can get to know a bit more about you as well!
