LFG for Legend of the Five Rings...

Hi there. It just occurred to me that I haven't played L5R since my old GM went AWOL a few months ago, and I've got all these perfectly good characters just sitting around gathering dust, so I guess I should probably try to get some use out of them. I'm open to playing a bushi, though I think I do better with courtiers or shugenja, and while I'm cool with combat, I generally prefer more story-driven games. I'm available after 5-6 PM PST on weekdays (except for Mon/Tues), or pretty much anytime on the weekend. Thanks in advance...
Are you looking for text-based (typing it out in the chat) or Voice-based (microphones and vocal cord action)? What age range are you looking for? (personally, as someone in his late 20s, I prefer to keep things 18+)

Whoops, didn't think of those things. Well, I prefer playing via Skype, since (1) I paid a lot of money for this mic, darn it, and (2) I have a chronic, deep-seated habit of completely ignoring the chat window when dice aren't being rolled. And I'm in my early 30s here, so yeah, I'd rather have a bit of maturity in my games as well. EDIT: Just as an update--Numenera would be cool, too.
Can't help you there. I can't do voice. I tried picking up a text-based L5R game here before but seems like there was no interest. I linked your post to someone I know was burning for a good L5R game, and they prefer voice as well. Good Luck.
Oh. Well, okay, thanks for that. Here's hoping. ;-)
I feel bad for leaving you out though, Tal. (He's a real cool guy and doesn't afraid of anything, as the saying goes) But yes, I'd consider myself very interested in some kind of an Legend of the Five Rings game. If one can overlook the fact that I'm UTC+2 and Swedish, I guess I've spent well enough time to be considered at least an intermediate leveled GM of the L5R universe. Sadly I've never had the chance to play it myself, but I'm giving that idea up since there's probably not a single L5R GM with experience apart from me on this D&D and Pathfinder-focused site. I'm 26 btw, and can guarantee you at least a bit of maturity, disregarding the occasional Freudian not-really-so-much-of-a-slip. :)
Hmmmm. I'm in California, which I think means there's a ten-hour difference between us. I guess that'd rule out weekdays, then. If we can find some more people with free weekends, maybe we can work something out. And yeah, I've often wondered why Roll20 doesn't split the LFG forum into two parts, one for D&D/Pathfinder and one for everything else. All the non-D&D/PF posts tend to just get buried as it is...
I am interested in joining your l5r campaign. Experienced a bit of Rokugan and would definitely contribute.
whats LFG and the 5 rings thing sounds like lord of the rings. if it is i would like to be in.
Sorry, Jordan, it's not--it's about samurai and ninjas and, like, Eastern mythological stuff. Anyway, we're up to three people now, so we're getting closer...
One important question is whether or not we're going to use the latest set of rules (i.e. 4th edition). Another is to what amount we're going to use the in-game lore and to what extent we're going to nerd about suffixes, societal rules and whatnot. I've read huge amounts of L5R lore at one point back when third was fresh and continued doing so throughout that edition. Got most of the books for fourth, and would not mind having a gander since my Rokugani history is a bit rusty to say the least.
Personally, I'd prefer 4E, just because it's the only one I know about and have the books for. ;-) I don't think I'd worry too much over the difference between "-sama" and "-dono" or whatever, but the lore and all the social stuff is such a huge part of the game that I'm not sure we can get by without it. I'll have to go read through it again, but I'm fine with that. By the way, I'm torn between either my Kitsuki investigator or my water shugenja at the moment. I guess it'll depend on what the party needs more.
If there is still room I would love to join. Do we know what day / time we would be playing.
hay can you tell when you been looking at playing and what time it be in aus brisbane
Sweet, I think we've got enough people to make something happen. Also, Jon, it may be a bit less lethal if I go with my Isawa character--I played him in a previous game, and he healed a guy for something like 57 Wounds once. Just saying. ;-)
I don't suppose there's room for one more is there? Been dying to get into L5R, but trying to find a group for it is nigh-impossible unless you're willing to GM, and I'd rather play at least once before I try to GM it.

I've studied Japanese language and history, and by also nerding samurai anime and samurai movies I hope I've learned a thing or two about japanese feudal reality and fiction. I'm able to dive into honorifics and technicalities in absurdum, and that's why I asked to what extent stuff was going to go down. Considering the lethality of the actual system, AEG suggests several ways to play - from immediate deaths to a more cinematic experience. Additionally, there's always ways to play an RPG the way you want and I wouldn't be surprised if you could mold L5R 4th Ed into a fight-centered anime-style game with charming flare, too! But ultimately, it's the groups' decision what they want to see and experience :)

Personally, I prefer a mix of combat and talky bits, especially since I tend to make characters who aren't super-badass fighters. (For example, my Kitsuki investigator is an awesome detective, but he's almost useless in a straight-up fight, and he's got a bad leg as well.) First things first, though--I think we need to nail down when we'll be playing. Marcus and I are almost on different sides of the planet, so I think either Saturday or Sunday would work. Because, you know, morning here = afternoon over there, and I've got work during the week...
Yeah, weekends are always the best. I'm not sure when either, though. (I tend not to want to play combat-only games just like you, Daniel, so no worries there)
I'm sure we can all agree that L5R is a combat-light game.
Minor update, by the way: I'm leaning towards making a ronin water shugenja at the moment. It's kind of an amalgamation of a couple of past characters from games that collapsed after a few sessions, but I think there's potential there. I'm open to other concepts, though.
Got me all excited and then you said weekends :( Best of luck! I've been looking into this system for awhile now.
Weekends work for me (again, assuming there's room). Saturday would be preferable, but Sundays work too. My timezone is EST, by the way.
If you're still looking for people or a GM I'd be interested.
Sweet, two potential GMs. I'd GM it myself, if I'd played more than twice. And if it hadn't been months since the last time I played. (And if I was good at GMing things.) x.x; But yeah, I'm liking the way this ronin concept is coming together. I've been gravitating towards more noble, heroic characters for a while now, and I kinda like the idea of a ronin shugenja/healer/village-protector type. Maybe with the "Hero of the People" advantage.

I could have GMed, but I've only spoken English as a GM once before. Also I've never really played with a group that used a class apart from the original Samurai ones. I would love to be able to play this game as a player at least once, but I've thought about GMing because there is such a deficit of interested L5R-players out there. I'm at least an intermediate leveled L5R GM, but that's almost exclusively in Swedish - I'd probably need some sessions to warm up, and as to not ruin the experience for anyone I would much rather be a PC. If noone presents themselves, though... Edit: L5R sheets are now up!
