Bad performance, rolls take 10-15 seconds before they show up

Hi, you are probably aware about this by looking at your monitoring server but performance is pretty bad at the moment. For the last two weeks rolls took about 10-15 seconds to appear, sometimes even longer. We play 17-21 GMT. This never happened before. Im not sure how many CPU cycles PRNGs need but they are probably not optimized for speed or multithreading.

Hello Mattis and Stephen. it has been noticed and there are a few things happening that could be part of the reason you are noticing the performance hit. The firebase servers have been hit by DDOS attacks and they are deploying new code also. ( <a href="https://twitter.com/FirebaseStatus?original_refere" rel="nofollow">https://twitter.com/FirebaseStatus?original_refere</a>... As this might be of slight interest also but not sure if it is happening now or it is soon to be or such: <a href="https://www.firebase.com/blog/2014-10-21-firebase-" rel="nofollow">https://www.firebase.com/blog/2014-10-21-firebase-</a>... We also have a wiki page about optimizing roll20 performance that might help you also: <a href="https://wiki.roll20.net/Optimizing_Roll20_Performance" rel="nofollow">https://wiki.roll20.net/Optimizing_Roll20_Performance</a>

Are you using 3d dice? If so you may want to try turning that off.
Its not on the players side. A couple of times today the connection just completely dropped. If you watch some streams from people playing DnD you also see the problem there and they are on a different continent, so its not localized either. I dont want to be the arrogant know-it-all, but are you only using firebase-servers or are you diversifying by using lets say AWS as well?

I still need an answer on whether you are using 3d dice. Do you have an example video you can link? Also, which browser are you using? Firefox has been having some issues lately.
My group was having this issue alot when we were playing yesterday from about 2:30PM Eastern to 9PM Eastern. Did not appear to mater if we used the character sheet to roll or did a manual /roll. As far as I am aware non of us have 3D dice turned on. It also happened some last Friday when itmejp was doing his big RollPlay stream.

Kevin , which character sheet are you using and which browser?
I was using the Dark Heresy 2 character sheets. I am running Chrome, no idea what my other players were running.

Kevin , please send me a join link. I'd like to see if there is anything campaign related.
This is something we're actively tracking. I don't think it's anything campaign related, I think it's general Internet lag on Firebase's end. When you submit a roll request (without 3D Dice turned on), it sends the request to our QuantumRoll server, which hears the request, generates the roll results, and sends them back to your group. The lag seems to be occurring sometime in the sending/receiving of this data, which is currently done via Firebase. The thing is, that means you would also be experiencing lag when you move token pieces or use text chat -- it's just that since you see those things happen instantly on your end, you may not realize it's lagging for other people. So I'm curious if anyone who's having these roll lags also has lag for example between when they send a text chat message and when everyone in their group receives it.
Would this lag also affect pings on the map? Glad you guys are looking into the issue. I only started noticing it a few weeks ago and thought it was just me at first. Is there any more detail you would like us to provide to you?
We've made a change today to the way that QuantumRoll communicates with the client. You'll need to reload to see this change if you're already in-game. We anticipate this change being temporary until we can get the underlying Firebase latency issues solved, but this should at least a) result in much faster rolls showing up for the roller and b) help alleviate a little stress on Firebase which should help overall latency issues as well. Let me know if you are now seeing reduced latency with these rolls during peak times. Thanks!
It seems to be better now.
Seems pretty dang unusable at the moment. Any updates on lag/speed issues?

According to <a href="http://status.roll20.net/" rel="nofollow">http://status.roll20.net/</a> there are problems cropping back up but they are being fixed as quick as can be.
i have a problem with joining a game I'm playing. The problem started on 02.11.2014 on my PC. When I clicked on the join game, the loading screen was stuck on Roll20 Loading... Recalculating splines... , Crafting spells list... or Critically hitting... . The link is: <a href="https://app.roll20.net/editor/" rel="nofollow">https://app.roll20.net/editor/</a> , after I log in of course. Even today I can not access it. But i could do it from my friends PC. PLZ help. I have Shockwave, Java and Flash all updated to the newest versions as well as the browser I'm using (Mozilla Firefox) and I did not have any problems until yesterday.
Ivor T., Please follow all the instructions on this page: <a href="https://wiki.roll20.net/Solving_Technical_Issues" rel="nofollow">https://wiki.roll20.net/Solving_Technical_Issues</a> Make sure you disable all of your plugins/add ons whether you think they might be affecting things or not. Sometimes those plugins do some really weird stuff.

Thx, i'll try. But the thing is, it all worked perfectly before, plugins/addons and all. New info: Tried it and it did not work. Tried it with Google Chrome and still nothing. So ... I'm stumped.

Are you having trouble getting into any other campaigns?
Just playing the one for the moment. And It seems that its only centered on and around my computer for some reason. I went in fine from my friends PC on the same day, and i went in online that same week multiple times from my PC and no problems. I have installed 2 new browsers to see if they will work, they are Opera and Comodo Dragon. And I have succeeded in both instances. What I don't understand then, why are Mozilla Firefox and Chrome having problems entering said game and the other 2 do not. Again, no special additions nor plugins have been added to the browsers. Here are the addons, plugins and extensions I am using on Firefox: Addblock Plus, Avast Online Security, Adobe Acrobat, Java Deployment Toolkit, Java (TM) Platform SE 8 U 25, OpenH264 Video Codec provided by Cisco Systems, Inc., Shockwave Flash and Shockwave for Director, all of witch have been used before with no problems and have been upgraded to their latest versions.
Adblock and sometimes various antivirus/security programs can cause issues. I assume that you went through and disabled all the plugins? Our general advice is to disable them all at once and if that solves the issue, turn them back on one at a time to see which one was causing the issue.
Could it be as simple as the changes Mozilla made in the new Firefox and some unknown variable on my PC just made the program go berserk and not function properly? I mean it can be that simple, can't it?
It could be. Whenever I start having problems with a program I uninstall all the add ons, then uninstall the program, then reboot, then reinstall program, then add ons. Its crazy how many times an update has gone wrong and broken something, but a fresh install just works.
We have seen some issues with the latest iteration of Firefox, yes, though Chrome does not seem to have the same problems.

Could certification be the problem, perhaps, from the point of view of some browsers? I went into the browser console of Firefox (security section) and i saw this in there: An error occurred during a connection to cdn.firebase.com:443. You have received an invalid certificate. Please contact the server administrator or email correspondent and give them the following information: Your certificate contains the same serial number as another certificate issued by the certificate authority. Please get a new certificate containing a unique serial number. (Error code: sec_error_reused_issuer_and_serial). Edit 1: This is from the JavaScript portion of the console: ReferenceError: Firebase is not defined app.js:22 TypeError: d20ext.finalPageLoad is not a function startjs:35 Edit 2: When I reloaded the page I got this in the Security errors and warnings: Content Security Policy: The page's settings blocked the loading of a resource at self ("script-src <a href="https://app.roll20.net" rel="nofollow">https://app.roll20.net</a> 'unsafe-eval' https://*.googlesyndication.com https://*.doubleclick.net <a href="https://partner.googleadservices.com" rel="nofollow">https://partner.googleadservices.com</a> <a href="https://www.googletagservices.com" rel="nofollow">https://www.googletagservices.com</a> <a href="https://ssl.google-analytics.com" rel="nofollow">https://ssl.google-analytics.com</a> <a href="https://ajax.googleapis.com" rel="nofollow">https://ajax.googleapis.com</a> <a href="https://d3clqjduf2gvxg.cloudfront.net" rel="nofollow">https://d3clqjduf2gvxg.cloudfront.net</a> <a href="https://cdn.firebase.com" rel="nofollow">https://cdn.firebase.com</a> https://*.firebaseio.com https://*.tokbox.com https://*.firebaseio.com <a href="http://static.opentok.com" rel="nofollow">http://static.opentok.com</a>" ). editor:8 Content Security Policy: The page's settings blocked the loading of a resource at self ("script-src <a href="https://app.roll20.net" rel="nofollow">https://app.roll20.net</a> 'unsafe-eval' https://*.googlesyndication.com https://*.doubleclick.net <a href="https://partner.googleadservices.com" rel="nofollow">https://partner.googleadservices.com</a> <a href="https://www.googletagservices.com" rel="nofollow">https://www.googletagservices.com</a> <a href="https://ssl.google-analytics.com" rel="nofollow">https://ssl.google-analytics.com</a> <a href="https://ajax.googleapis.com" rel="nofollow">https://ajax.googleapis.com</a> <a href="https://d3clqjduf2gvxg.cloudfront.net" rel="nofollow">https://d3clqjduf2gvxg.cloudfront.net</a> <a href="https://cdn.firebase.com" rel="nofollow">https://cdn.firebase.com</a> https://*.firebaseio.com https://*.tokbox.com https://*.firebaseio.com <a href="http://static.opentok.com" rel="nofollow">http://static.opentok.com</a>" ). editor:9
The Edit2 warnings are normal and you can ignore them. For the CDN SSL cert stuff, that is definitely weird. Did it ever happen again after the first time?
I haven't checked then so I don;t know. I think i was a fluke that I even found this when I did, cause I never had to use these tools and options in the Firefox browser before. What I believe is that I have installed something on my computer, a program, a game or something else that has made the browser go nuts when accessing that particular part of your site. I'm saying this cause on the rest of the sites I visit on the net, this does not happen, I have tried accessing the same game parameters from a different PC (a laptop) in my home that uses Chrome and it worked perfectly. BTW, this is a bit peculiar, when I used chrome on my PC it did not work, but when I used Comodo Dragon, witch is based on Chrome, I believe, it works perfectly as well, so there is a brain teaser.
Just an Update: For some reason the problem has fixed it self after the latest Firefox Update. So, the thing before might have just been a bug or something else that made the browser go fritz. So thx, good luck and good work.
