Dynamic Lighting Help! Please

I understand and use dynamic lighting a lot but i find it impossible to get ride of the giant pillars of blackness that hide everything. I've tried looking but havn't been able to find a way to display objects without that pillar. If I use a pyramid I can't see the face of it i'm looking at and if I use an X it is unnatural and you see odd lighting patterns. I'm trying to make some epic maps for my dming but i just can't get this dynamic lighting to work on anything other then walls and such to look good. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.
It is tricky, and never going to be perfect, I have spent a lot of time placing light sources to get it right. It will never look real, but with practice you can convey a feel. Keep a charcter or three with different vision settings on the screen and use control-L to see how they see it frequently, look to build a mood, not to give it daylight. On a large scene I have used a moving moon and squigles of DL wall to simulate clouds blocking the light. This is a huge map with huundreds of tokens.

Maybe someday we'll get more diffuse shadows. Every session that I use dynamic lighting I hear bitching about the 'weird shadows', I'm about ready to pull my own hair out. x.x
you can add a few more dim light sources, this was an early attempt. it was pretty impressive at the time. I may jazz it up a bit later. You should consider voting for my proposal to have global lighting that could be set to dim, then bright areas could be added. There is also one to have universal variable light, but I think a step in the right direction would be off/dim/bright for global.
